You must turn in for approval a one to two (1-2) page summary of your proposed paper topic. This proposal should include a summary of your intended topic, a brief overview of the intended sections of your paper and a list of at least 5 sources (3 of them from peer-reviewed journals). This list must be in APA format. More information and a due date will be provided by the instructor. This proposal will be reviewed by me and returned with suggestions and comments pending my approval of the topic. If your topic is not approved, you must re-submit a proposal before continuing with your paper.
Paper:
You must write a literature review on a juvenile justice related topic. All topics must be approved by me before beginning your paper. It is important that you turn in a paper that is grammatically clean. I expect words to be spelled correctly, proper punctuation, proper sentence structure, and organization for this paper, as you are in an upper-division class. Your paper will be graded on content, grammatical/technical issues, and overall appearance. The paper should be seven to nine (7-9) pages in length, double-spaced. A minimum of seven (7) peer-reviewed journal articles are required. You may also use other academic sources (books, government websites, etc.) in addition to your 7 sources. DO NOT use non-academic sources in this paper. If you are unsure about your sources, please ask me. Further information will be provided at a later date.

Proposal:
My research question is: How does the family socioeconomic status affect recidivism rates among juveniles? I want to find out how different social environments affect juveniles and how, in each environment, the amount of money plays a role. With this, I want to know if there is a higher rate of recidivism in lower socioeconomic areas that make it more likely for juveniles to commit a crime again. A factor to look into that can play a role in this is race and whether different races are more likely to recidivate than others. This is interesting to me because disproportionately juveniles make up a higher percent of crime then they are in the total population. So with that I want to know if some juveniles are just bad apples and make up a majority of the crime as a minority or are the majority of juveniles being delinquent and breaking the law.
There will be different sections that focus on the different factors of my research question. One section will focus on lower socio-economic areas and families and how they are more likely to have juveniles that are delinquent. This section will cover the theories for this and how other classes are similar and different with regards to juvenile delinquents. Also, what is the correlation of a delinquent juvenile and their parents in their family life? A second section will focus on the recidivism rates among juveniles. It will look into why juveniles recidivate and what types of crimes are committed when a juvenile is delinquent and recidivates. Is there a change in the type of crime the second time; is it worse? Thirdly, I will look at treatment programs and see the effects that they have on deterring juveniles to commit crime again. I will look into the court system and how they treat different cases.,along with which source of punishment, jail or rehabilitation, is better deterrence to reduce recidivism.
