It is estimated that as many as half a million people are slaves in Haiti and around 30,000 Haitian children are smuggled annually to work in the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, and elsewhere. There is a large population of Restaveks (children who are used for various unpaid labor in return for room and board) internally in Haiti. This is a supply nation with an abundance of impoverished children who are bought by wealthier citizens of their own country, or by foreigners for the purpose of domestic labor, agricultural labor and/or sex slavery. Among the Haitian middle and upper class and foreign visitors, there is a demand for these Restaveks.

The reasons for the Restaveks’ vulnerability are many: poverty, low educational levels, a high birth rate, a young population, a high unemployment rate, etc. Poverty is the most crippling of these and drives families to pass their children to strangers in hopes that they will have a better life. The families are taken advantage of and tricked, as their children are instead forced into slavery. To end trafficking in Haiti, education could be the most influential factor. If foreign governments and non-governmental organizations began to invest in Haiti’s educational infrastructure, children and families could be made aware of the Restavek problem and the dangers associated with it. Education could also breed innovation and industry for the nation which could, in turn, provide job growth and creation.

RESTAVEK FREEDOM

In 2007 Restavek Freedom was founded to abolish slavery in Haiti within our lifetime. This organization has volunteer advocates who work with over 50 schools in Port-au-Prince to provide free education to Restavek children. There they also have a transition house for children to escape from the most violent of Restavek situations and eventually be reunited with their family, have a foster family, or live on their own when old enough. Restavek Freedom also works within the rural and urban communities to create community centers that reach out to residents with information, education and literacy programs and life-skills training.

They need involvement to grow and to be effective in their mission. Restavek Freedom holds an annual conference and invites churches to attend or send representatives. They can provide information and training for those who want to volunteer time and/or money. They work with individuals through universities and faith communities, businesses and community groups, in living rooms and dorm rooms, engaging people, raising awareness of their ultimate goal – ending slavery in Haiti.
