Explain whether Valleck should report a liability in addition to the note.

In the March 2012 meeting of Valleck Corporation’s board of directors, a question arose as to the way a possible obligation should be disclosed in the forthcoming financial statements for the year ended December 31. A veteran board member brought to the meeting a draft of a disclosure note that had been prepared by the controller’s office for inclusion in the annual report. Here is the note:

On May 9, 2011, the United States environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Notice of Violation (NOV) to Valleck alleging violations of the Clean Air Act. Subsequently, in June 2011 the EPA commenced a civil action with respect to the foregoing violation seeking civil penalties of approximately $853,000. The EPA alleges that Valleck exceeded applicable volatile organic substance emission limits. The Company estimates that the cost to achieve compliance will be $190,000; in addition the Company expects to settle the EPA lawsuit for a civil penalty of 205,000 which will be paid in 2014.

“Where did we get the 205,000 figure?” he asked. On being informed that this is the amount negotiated last month by company attorneys with the EPA, the director inquires, Arent we supposed to report a liability for that in addition to the note?”

Required:

Explain whether Valleck should report a liability in addition to the note. Why or Why not? For full disclosure, should anything be added to the disclosure note itself?

Writing the Final Portfolio

The Final Portfolio

Must be seven to eight double-spaced pages in length, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
Must include a title page with the following:
Title of paper
Student’s name
Course name and number
Instructor’s name
Date submitted
Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.
Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.
Must use at least five scholarly resources, including a minimum of two from the Ashford Online Library.
Must document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
Must include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Write an exploratory paper of 850-1000 words and present it according to the format guidelines in your syllabus.

The key to this assignment is examination of the topic from different perspectives, actively seeking opposing or alternate points of view to analyze, compare, contrast, synthesize and evaluate. This is the dialectic process. Remember, you do not need to come to a conclusion or take a stand; in fact, you must avoid taking a firm position. You can and should say if you find one position more logical, easier to believe, or in some way more desirable than another, just don’t declare that position to be the right or best one. Instead, keep your mind open to additional questions, contradictions and complexities that may arise in the course of your research.

Your research log should includes dates and all the necessary reference information for each source, an annotation of the information you found in that source, and your thoughts and reflections, showing how your thinking was influenced by what you learned and what you did next.
Exploratory Research Log and Paper

These are the requirements:

Keep a research log.
Your research log must show at least 10 sources including at least two articles from one or more databases and at least one scholarly article. (The scholarly article can be from a database, thus also fulfilling one database source requirement.)
Each source must be properly cited according to APA documentation style. The log will be turned in with your paper.

Do research to examine your question, problem or issue from a variety of perspectives.

Write an exploratory paper of 850-1000 words and present it according to the format guidelines in your syllabus.

In your paper explain your chosen question, problem or issue and why you are interested in it and have not, as yet, reached a satisfactory answer or position (your starting point).

Write a first-person, chronologically organized, narrative account of your thinking process as you did your research. Do not simply report on what you found, but show evidence of a dialectic process in which you think about what you are learning. Analyze what you are learning, compare and contrast new information with previously learned information, question discrepancies, notice new questions that arise, synthesize ideas by reflecting on information learned from various sources, assess the relative strengths and weaknesses of various points of view, ‘talk back’ to your sources, decide what you need to do next. It is not necessary to arrive at a satisfactory answer, but you must show how your thinking has evolved.

Use appropriate APA documentation style for in-text citations

Does your community have nuclear waste to dispose of?

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Examining Your Community’s Source of Energy

It is easy to criticize society for not using renewable resources, but in reality, how difficult would this transition be? What processes and procedures would be involved? How would such a transition be made?

The purpose of this assignment is for you to consider what type of energy your neighborhood is currently powered by and what it would really take to convert this source to a renewable one. How much would it take to switch your community to a renewable resource and what would this mean for the environment?

For the assignment, complete the following:

Identify three primary types of energy that powers your home as well as all of the homes in your community. You may find this information on your community Web site or the Web sites of the local power companies. For example, your community may use electricity and solar panels.
Explain how the sources of energy you identified impact the environment. Consider the following:
Does the use of these types of energy resource have a negative impact on the environment in your area?
Does your community have nuclear waste to dispose of?
Has your community always used these three power sources? If so, how do you feel this has impacted the environment over time?
How much of an impact have these sources of energy had on local air and water quality?
Considering the current source(s) of power available, determine how much energy your house uses each month. You can find this information on your monthly energy bill.

Calculate your annual usage for a year. Using this value, estimate the energy consumption for your community. The US Census Bureau is one resource you can use to estimate the number of households in your community.

You can use the following formulae for this calculation

What are some examples of brand strategies? Which strategy would best fit your marketing plan topic for your course project

Another key strategy that can be implemented during the growth stage is to increase the channels of distribution. For example, Netflix pioneered the DVD home delivery system. Now, the company is leading streaming video & it has been embedded into some DVD players/entertainment devices. These can be considered NEW channels of distribution which help keep the product/service in the “growth” stage.

Class, can you think of other products in the growth stage that have added new channels of distribution to increase and/or sustain growth?

2.Additionally, here are some of the characteristics of the maturity stage:

• Slowdown in sales

• Many suppliers

• Substitute products

• Overcapacity leads to competition

• Increased promotion and R&D to support sales and profits

Class, what are some strategies that companies can use to extend a product’s life in the maturity stage?

3.As defined in your textbook, points of difference (PODs) are characteristics of a product that make it superior to the competition. In other words, it’s a unique strength.

Class, why can an insignificant point-of-difference lead to product failure? Can you think of an example?

4.Some have said that a brand is a promise. What does that mean and why is having a strong brand an advantage to a company and to the consumer?

5.Class, what are some examples of brand strategies? Which strategy would best fit your marketing plan topic for your course project?

Brand equity adds intangible value to products and services. The value is reflected in how consumers think, feel, and act with respect to the brand, as well as the prices, market share, and profitability that the brand commands for the firm.

6.Brand equity adds intangible value to products and services. The value is reflected in how consumers think, feel, and act with respect to the brand, as well as the prices, market share, and profitability that the brand commands for the firm.

Class, what are some examples of well-known brands that offer this extra intangible value to products? Based on the consumer-based brand equity pyramid shown in your textbook (Chapter 11), how do companies build brand equity
