Comparative Essay Draft

Write a 750-1000 word essay about a pair of items in which the similarities and differences of those items are compared

and contrasted in the style described within Unit III. Please note that the Comparative Essay Final will be due in Unit IV of

this course. However, you should complete the entire paper in this draft and do your best work, as you will have more

applicable feedback from which to make changes to your essay for the final draft.

Purpose: Throughout Unit III, we have discussed the conventions of the comparative essay. The purpose of this

assignment is to measure your mastery of those conventions by putting your knowledge into practice. In a larger context,

the purpose of writing a comparative essay is to gain the skills of detecting similarities and differences between at least

two items and then using those similarities and differences to create knowledge about either one or both of the items. In

this way, the comparative essay is both a tool of observation and analysis.

Process: For the comparative essay, you will complete the following steps:

1. Choose a pair of topics that complement one another: See the suggested list of topics in the “Comparative Essay

Topics Handout” below in the supplemental documents portion of these instructions.

2. Create a list of similarities and differences: See Unit III, Lesson 2, for more instruction about how to create a list.

3. Create a thesis statement based on similarities, differences, or both similarities and differences: See Unit III,

Lesson 3, for more information about how to create a thesis statement.

4. Choose whether to organize your essay by point or by subject: For an essay organized by point, see Unit III,

Lesson 4, and the “Comparative Essay Example: Essay Organized by Point” below. For an essay organized by

subject, see Unit III, Lesson 5, and the “Comparative Essay Example: Essay Organized by Subject” below.

5. Consult the “Comparative Essay: Final Self-Check List” below before submission.

Developing a Health Advocacy Campain

Application: Developing a Health Advocacy Campaign

THIS IS A 12 PAGES PAPER

To be an effective advocate and to develop a successful health advocacy campaign, you must have a clear idea of the goals of your campaign program and be able to communicate those goals to others. In addition, it is the nature of nurses to want to help, but it is important to make sure that the vision you develop is manageable in size and scope. By researching what others have done, you will better appreciate what can realistically be accomplished. It is also wise to determine if others have similar goals and to work with these people to form strategic partnerships. If you begin your planning with a strong idea of your resources, assets, and capabilities, you will be much more likely to succeed and truly make a difference with those you hope to help.

Over the next 3 weeks, you will develop a 9- to 12-page paper that outlines a health advocacy campaign designed to promote policies to improve the health of a population of your choice. This week, you will establish the framework for your campaign by identifying a population health concern of interest to you. You will then provide an overview of how you would approach advocating for this issue. In Week 9, you will consider legal and regulatory factors that have an impact on the issue and finally, in Week 10, you will identify ethical concerns that you could face as an advocate. Specific details for each aspect of this paper are provided each week. The Final Paper will be due in Week 10. This paper will serve as the Portfolio Application for the course.

Before you begin, review the complete Assignment.

This week, begin developing your health advocacy campaign by focusing on the following:

Identifying a Problem

To prepare:

Select a population health issue of interest to you and identify the population affected by the issue.( for me it can be either cervical or breast cancer, (young females) or childhood obesity, or prevention of coronary heart disease in the elderly)

Locate two scholarly articles, each of which provides a description of an effective health advocacy program that addresses your issue. here are some sample articles below:

Analyze the attributes of the programs to determine what made them effective.

Reflect on a policy you could propose or a change to a current policy to further improve the health of the population you selected with regard to the issue.

Consider how you could develop an advocacy program, applying the attributes identified in similar, effective programs.

To complete:

For this section of your paper (approximately 3–4 pages in length) address the following:

Describe your selected population health issue and the population affected by this issue.

Summarize the advocacy programs you researched in this area.

Explain the attributes that made those programs effective.

Develop a plan for a health advocacy campaign that seeks to create a new policy or change an existing policy with regard to the issue and population you selected. Be sure to include in your plan:

A description of the public health issue and proposed policy solution

Specific objectives for the policy you want to be implemented

The means by which you will convey information to various stakeholders on the need for this policy change

Be sure your proposed need is substantiated by data and evidence.

Methods of establishing support for the policy, including how to influence policymakers

Explain how the attributes of the effective advocacy programs you researched could be applied to your proposed advocacy campaign.

Before you begin, review the complete Assignment.

Legal Considerations

To prepare:

Review Chapter 3 of Health Policy and Politics: A Nurse’s Guide (3rd ed.) to determine methods of influencing the political process.

Reflect on whether the policy you would like to promote could best be achieved through the development of new legislation, or a change in an existing law or regulation.

Contemplate in what ways existing laws or regulations may impact how you proceed in advocating for your proposed policy.

Consider how you could influence legislators or other policymakers to enact the policy you would like to propose.

Think about the obstacles of the legislative process that may prevent your proposed policy from being implemented as intended.

To complete:

For this section of your paper (approximately 3–4 pages in length) address the following:

Explain whether your proposed policy could be enacted through a modification of existing law or regulation or the creation of new legislation/regulation.

Explain how existing laws or regulations could impact your advocacy efforts.

Provide an analysis of the methods you could use to influence legislators or other policymakers to support your policy. In particular, explain how you would use the “three legs” of lobbying in your advocacy efforts.

Summarize the obstacles you anticipate arising in the legislative process and how you could overcome these hurdles.

Which of the two options should Patricia pursue if she wants to open a restaurant in a suburban area of Los Angeles? Calculate the total expected utility from each restaurant option and compare.

Managerial Economics / Consumer Demand Analysis

Consumer Demand Analysis and Estimation Applied Problems

Please complete the following two applied problems:

Problem 1:

Patricia is researching venues for a restaurant business. She is evaluating three major attributes that she considers important in her choice: taste, location, and price. The value she places on each attribute, however, differs according to what type of restaurant she is going to start. If she opens a restaurant in a suburban area of Los Angeles, then taste is the most important attribute, three times as important as location, and two times as important as price. If she opens a restaurant in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, then location becomes three times as important as taste and two times as important as price.

She is considering two venues, respectively, a steak restaurant and a pizza restaurant, both of which are priced the same. She has rated each attribute on a scale of 1 to 100 for each of the two different types of restaurants.

Graph is not required. Describe your answer, and show your calculations.

Which of the two options should she pick if she plans to open a restaurant in the Los Angeles metropolitan area?

Describe your answer, and show your calculations.

Which option should she pursue if the probability of finding a restaurant venue in a suburban area can be reliably estimated as 0.7 and in a metropolitan area as 0.3? Describe your reasoning and show your calculations.

Provide a description of a scenario in which this kind of decision between two choices, based on weighing their underlying attributes, applies in the “real-world” business setting.

Furthermore, what are the benefits and drawbacks, if any, to this method of decision making?

Problem 2

The demand function for Newton’s Donuts has been estimated as follows:

Qx = -14 – 54Px + 45Py + 0.62Ax

where Qx represents thousands of donuts; Px is the price per donut; Py is the average price per donut of other brands of donuts; and Ax represents thousands of dollars spent on advertising Newton’s Donuts. The current values of the independent variables are Ax=120, Px=0.95, and Py=0.64.

Show all of your calculations and processes.

Describe your answer for each question in complete sentences, whenever it is necessary.

Calculate the price elasticity of demand for Newton’s Donuts and describe what it means. Describe your answer and show your calculations.

Derive an expression for the inverse demand curve for Newton’s Donuts. Describe your answer and show your calculations.

If the cost of producing Newton’s Donuts is constant at $0.15 per donut, should they reduce the price and thereafter, sell more donuts (assuming profit maximization is the company’s goal)?

Should Newton’s Donuts spend more on advertising?

Evaluate the effectiveness of your interview technique (Approximately one paragraph for this entire section).

By Monday, February 8, 2016 complete the assignment presented below.

During the first week of class you conducted your first practice interview, and in week three you developed an Interview Guide. For this activity, you will be using your Interview Guide, the analysis of potential interview biases from LASA 1, and the feedback you have received from your instructor to conduct an interview with a volunteer.

Prior to the Interview

Locate an adult volunteer.
Read the analysis requirements below and ENSURE you meet them within your interview. Make sure your interview includes:
A minimum of 5 open and 5 closed ended questions (10 total).
A minimum of 5 examples of paraphrasing, summaries, or reflections techniques (must have at least one of each paraphrase, summary, and reflection/5 total).

Gather Recording Equipment (video is preferred). You will need to record your interview.
Also make sure you have a watch or a timer to keep track of the length of your interview. Make sure your interview is not less than 5 minutes long.

The Interview

Needs to be at least 5 minutes long, but it should not be more than 10 minutes.
Be prepared! Although it may not sound like it, 5 minutes is a long time in interviewing time. If you are having problems filling 5 minutes, go back to the interview skills you have learned about (e.g., probing, reflections, and summaries).

After the Interview

Play back the recording of the interview.
Transcribe or write out the interview completely. Be sure to write outeverything said during the interview
After you have written the transcript of the interview, provide a detailed analysis of the interview. On your transcript:
Identify Questions Used: On your transcript identify at least 5 closed and 5 open ended questions that you used during the interview. Identify these on your transcript using all caps (10 questions total).

For example:

Interviewer: How long have you been having headaches? CLOSED QUESTION

Evaluate the Questions: After you have identified examples of 5 open and 5 open questions in your transcript, write an evaluation of the effectiveness of your use of questions (Approximately one paragraph for this analysis). Explain whether or not your questions were effective. How did your client respond to your questions? How would you improve the effectiveness of your questions?
Identify Techniques Used: Next, identify at least 5 examples of paraphrasing, summarizing, or reflections you used (must have at least one of each: paraphrase, summary, and reflection). Again, use all caps on your transcript to identify each technique.

For example:
