3. Explain the three types of love: companionate, passionate, and compassionate. What are the differences and similarities among them? What is an example of each type? How does Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love distinguish romantic love, from empty love or infatuation? Please thoroughly address each of the components in Figure 12.1.

Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love

Robert Sternberg (1986) divides love into even more distinct categories. In his triangular theory of love, he describes three aspects of love. Each can be thought of as a point on a triangle (see Figure 12.1). Intimacy is one component, described as feelings of closeness or bonds to another person. Intimacy may include sharing of oneself and one’s possessions with another, counting on that person in times of need, and receiving emotional support from and providing emotional support to the other person. We tend to grow in intimacy within a relationship. Intimacy is moderately stable over time. Typically, intimacy is quite important in long-term relationships. We have some control over how much intimacy we have in a relationship though we may not be consciously aware of how much we have.

The second and third components of love in the triangular theory are passion and commitment. Passion involves physical attraction to another person or expression of desires and needs. Passion is not necessarily stable in our relationships. Generally, we do not have a great deal of control over passion, though we are often aware of how much passion we are feeling for someone else. The final component is commitment. According to Sternberg, this can be a short-term commitment, the decision to love a particular other person, or a long-term commitment, the decision to stay with someone over the long term. We control the amount of commitment we have in a relationship, and it is important for long-term relationships. Individuals who are securely attached tend to have more intimacy and commitment in relationships, and greater relationship satisfaction (Madey & Rodgers, 2009).

Within the triangular theory of love these three components are combined to describe different kinds of love. For example, infatuated love is a type of love that includes passion but no intimacy or commitment. Companionate love, on the other hand, includes intimacy and commitment but no passion.

In many cases, prejudice stems from the unknown. As individuals, we tend to migrate toward those who may look like us, act like us, and think like us. As a result, it may be difficult for us to open our minds and embrace those whose values, beliefs, and overall sense of self differ from our own.

For this assignment, compose a paper that is three to four pages in length. In your paper, discuss the impacts of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination in the context of social psychology. Be sure to address the following points:

1. Define and describe the following terms: prejudice, stereotype, discrimination, and ingroup vs. outgroup. Based on your own experiences in the social world, can you relate to any of these terms? Do you identify with a particular term? Why or why not?

2. Examine the social, cognitive, and societal origins of prejudice and stereotypes. Be sure to include specific information regarding categorization, such as ingroup favoritism and the outgroup homogeneity effect, norms, competition for resources, and social inequalities. Of the categories presented, which do you think are the most significant in our society and in your particular community?

You have just been promoted to sergeant in the Community Policing Division of the Centervale Police Department. Your first assignment is to examine the criminal behavior in your area and work with local agencies to develop proactive policies to help reduce criminal activity and lower the overall crime rate. Your jurisdiction covers many different areas; you know that a one-size-fits-all approach will not work. You decide to break down your jurisdiction into smaller areas to tackle them individually.

Area 1 is a low-income area that is often featured in the news for its high murder rate. This area is a transient, high-rent district (for example, the housing is not expensive, but most houses are rented, not owned, by occupants) populated with single-parent households. Most citizens are unemployed, and the high dropout rate paints the school system as being one of the worst in the region.

Area 2 is also a low-income area with a lot of property crime but with an overall lower crime rate than that in Area 1. Many employed dual-parent households have purchased their homes through government programs instead of opting to rent. Although the schools are better and the dropout rate is relatively lower than that in Area 1, the dropout rate is still higher than the national average.

Area 3 is culturally diverse and continually changes and grows every year. Although the overall crime rate has risen slowly, unemployment is high, property crime is high, and violent crime is high. Specifically, Area 3 has an unusually high murder rate.

Area 4 has both employed, high-income families and employed, low-income families. Because land costs less, expensive houses continue to be built in low-income areas. The Centervale Police Department reports an extremely high number of calls-for-service from citizens residing in high-income housing in low-income neighborhoods, who report frequent incidents of vandalism and other property crimes.
