As a senior manager in a medium-sized but highly profitable equipment manufacturing organization, you and other senior leaders have decided to partner with another company on several projects of mutual interest. Your company has the financial strength and market strength to join the partnership, and you have negotiated a tentative agreement with the other company. Your company is in Houston, Texas, in the United States, but the company you are partnering with is in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The other company has some very valuable products and customers, it has an experienced workforce, and it has great brand recognition.

What are some of the cultural areas that you need to know more about before you make the partnership of the companies happen? Specifically, what might the comparison and contrasts be in language, religion, forms of address, holidays, other time off, dress, and food? Research the culture, with particular focus on the business culture, and determine what cultural areas you must address to build a strong working partnership, and discuss how you will address each of them.

Social justice has been defined in different ways, but the definitions usually include similar ideologies. As you study the concept of social justice, you will come across some of the following ideas:

Research the definition of social justice in the United States using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Select another country to examine its definition of social justice in order to analyze the ideologies and similarities using the following steps:

Consider that the United States is comprised of multilingual groups, and language ties people to a culture. If we look at the United States as having many different cultures, the reason we need to develop intercultural competence is to be civil to those around us.

For this discussion, consider how regional dialects, speech patterns, and idioms can separate people by making communication between groups more difficult or challenging. For example, people who live in the South can usually easily determine where in Texas someone is from, whereas someone from the Midwest would only “hear” Southern. Similarly, someone from the city of Boston is actually segregated by language; those who have lived in Boston for generations speak considerably differently than do those who arrived more recently. These situations can lead to stereotyping.

Although there is no “right or wrong” regarding these practices, such differences can hamper understanding.

Whether aware of it or not, each of us views the world based on the language stereotypes we have grown up with or been exposed to.
