Describe Abell’s three-dimensional business-definition model and explain where it can be utilized. Then, consider Reader’s Digest Association, publisher of Reader’s Digest, the largest circulation magazine in the world in 1992. As famous and as popular as its magazine and brand were at the time, the real value to the company was the huge database of subscribers that it had (around 50 million readers). It has used that database to sell various products such as condensed books and other publications, videos, CDs, and so on. Using Abell’s model, explain what other products it could send down this distribution channel which would be amenable to mail order and that would appeal to its subscriber base.

QUESTIONS:

Based on what you have read, should we legalize the production of human clones?

What arguments most influenced your decision?

How would you explain your position to someone who disagrees with you?

Reading 1:

POLICY AND PEOPLE

Medical research using human cloning techniques should be permitted for therapeutic purposes, the Australian Academy of Science (AAS) has declared in a controversial statement released last week.

The Academy says, the recent cloning advances could revolutionise treatment of damaged tissues and organs. “Human cells, whether derived from cloning techniques, from embryonic stem-cell lines, or from primordial germ cells should not be precluded from use in approved research activities in cellular and developmental biology”, says the AAS statement (http://www.science.org.au/policy/statemen/cloning.htm).

Sue Serjeantson from the AAS Steering Group on Human Cloning, said the Academy, like other similar organisations internationally was firmly opposed to reproductive cloning to create fetuses. “We want to encourage public discussion on this. It is going to take quite a long time, as it is a complex issue and there will be different and legitimate points of view being aired.”

Recent developments make self-compatible tissue and organ repair more likely, the AAS notes. These developments include: cloning of mammals from adult cells; the establishment of embryonic stem-cell cultures; and the ability of human fetal nerve stem-cells to develop into multiple and appropriate nerve-cell types following transplantation into animals. Julian Savulescu (Ethics Unit, The Murdoch Institute for Genetics Research, Melbourne), supports the AAS position: “Some people think that human zygotes are special because they have the potential to create people. Cloning has shattered that belief. There is no morally significant difference between a fertilised egg in a petri dish in an IVF [in-vitro fertilisation] clinic, a cloned cell, and a skin cell: they could all be persons, with the application of modern technology”.

However, the Catholic church and some ethicists have condemned the AAS’s position. The federal Government supports the more cautious line taken by the Australian Health Ethics Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council, which advocates regulation to allow cloning on embryos in “exceptional circumstances”.

Reading 2:

New methods can create a baby who is your genetic twin

YES

The cloning of human beings is now possible. Scientists can take an egg cell, remove its DNA, insert DNA from a cell of any person, and create an embryo who is that person’s younger but identical twin. This technology offers a miracle option for families who cannot have children of their own by any other method. After 25 years as a fertility specialist, trying to help couples have babies, I have joined with scientists in Europe and elsewhere to develop that option. By doing so, I believe, we will be helping humanity.

It is true that the cloning of animals-such as Dolly the sheep, created in Scotland in 1997-has so far had a high failure rate and is fraught with risks. But those risks have been exaggerated, and many of them have resulted from improper cloning. Meanwhile, I can show you e-mails from thousands of families eager to accept those risks. They say in their messages that if they are able to have a child through cloning, they will love that son or daughter just as much as they would any other.

Believe it or not, the genie is out of the bottle. Human cloning will be done whether we like it or not. I think we should accept it, make it legal, regulate it, and make sure it is done in a responsible, scientifically correct way -not left to unscrupulous black-market exploiters.

NO

Don’t think about human cloning from the point of view of the person being cloned. Think about it as if you were the younger, duplicated copy. If you do, you’ll see at once why cloning a human being is deeply unethical.

First, the known grave risks of abnormality and deformity seen in animal cloning make attempts at human cloning an immoral experiment on the resulting child-to-be. Second, even if you were a healthy clone, would you want to be constantly compared with the adult original in whose image you have been made? Wouldn’t you want to have your own unique identity and an open-ended future, fully a surprise to yourself and the world?

If you were the clone of your “mother,” would it help your adolescence to turn into the spitting image of the woman Daddy fell in love with? If you were the clone of your “father” but your parents later divorced, would you like to look just like the man your mother now detests?

Third, don’t you think it is a form of child abuse for parents to try to determine in advance just exactly what kind of a child you are supposed to be? Do you want to live under the tyranny of their biologically determined expectations?

Finally, would you like to turn human procreation into manufacture, producing children as artifacts? Cloning is tyrannical and dehumanizing. We should have none of it

What is love/happiness?

Pick three topics for your Concept essay, and fastwrite about them for at least ten minutes each. When you fastwrite, yes, actually set yourself a timer, and don’t let yourself stop before it goes off (but do keep going if you’ve found a good writing groove!). If you can’t write about it for 10 minutes, you probably can’t write an entire essay on it. Don’t worry about sentence structure or spelling errors, or anything else superficial at this point; just focus on capturing your ideas on paper or the computer screen. I will check them off on Wed., and you will turn them in with your final draft. If you can’t write about it for 10 minutes, you probably can’t write an entire essay on it.

EXAMPLE:

1. Nature vs Nuture. Nature, an unforgiving phenomena of the physical world, that usually includes plants, animals, and landscapes, and other features or products of Earth. Nuture, to care for and encourage the growth and development of. People are raised and nurtured from birth, and from that usually grow up with the logic they learned as a kid. Animals, some are raised until adulthood and others given natural animal instinct by mother nature to fend for themeselves and survive. Two totally different concepts that could explain human behavior in the world today. Even if people are raised and nurtured to hopefully one day possess certain qualities, it is possible that by some natural instinct, we prefer a lifestlye that society cannot teach. For example, ask yourself what type of landscape would you prefer; the beach, the desert, or the forest? If you grew up in a forest, you might choose a forest because that is what you are most comfortable with, you were nurtured there.

2. What is love/happiness? two words whose definitions people tend to think have the same meaning but in reality have some differences. For some it can be said that you can be happy without love, but can you love without being happy? In a dictionary definition, Love is having an intense feeling of deep affection. Happiness is the state of being happy, in other words feeling or showing pleasure or contentment. People all over the world can have many different opinions of these two words. Some will say they are the same because in a sense, it is what people strive for in life. Is it not the common childhood dream to grow up, have a career, find your true love, and then ultimately live out your life and be happy?

3. Music. Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. There are many different types and genres of music. There are different sounds made electronically, by instruments, or even man-made. All of these factors are important to music, for it all makes different impacts to those who listen to it. Different genres can include Hip Hop, Country, Rock, Soul/R&B, Pop, Raggae, Jazz, Classical, and so much more. Even with every distinct genre there is some kind of sub-genre to choose from. Music truly is an important concept in todays world. As humans, sound is one of the most important of the 5 senses. We use sound to identify things that make noise, to respond to command, and interact/conversate with others.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE:

1 Politics:

Politics was once a great thing in our nation. Helping those with education, housing, and making sure jobs were available. Not only that but medical advances on helping those who needed it. Now look at it, just a word that people use to show they have power. It’s almost as if they are fooling the people into believe they no longer run the country but the politians do. What sense does that make. You can never see what new petition or law or rule theyre going to come out with next. Once these laws helped us as a society believe in one other despite our differences. But now look at us. They allow people to burn, step on, and desicrate our flag. They also are going into the court system about how stolen valor is protected by the first amendment. Preposturous. These are now the polotics that run our country were there was a time were there was no controversy to what desicrating the flag meant by consquence.

2 Military:

No know here knows more than those who have and are serving for our government what itis truely like to be completely held by a piece of paper that was signed years before present that you must and will obey without question. You cannot leave until you are given permission or your time is served. In all though it gives you a set of skill that you would not have had otherwise. It gives you discipling that you rarely see in poeple in their teens to late twenties. not only that but It also gives you the ability to not worry about attending schools in which you couldn’t afford before. The physical demand, the mental stability, the emotional steadiness that you endure is something you keep with you. Also in my experience I found those I call family.

3 loyalty:

What is loyalty now? It’s something which was once a valued trait. Now it’s hardly found. People are so focused on becoming the next big thing or they use others for their own personal gain. It sucks that you look at a dog and that dog will stay with you forever. People on the otherhand well they turn their back on you because you said something that “offended them” when back in the time of need you were there for them. Funny how now loyalty has become a concept in which people have to question actions and words instead of trusting through experience

Context

What causes people to be drawn to one another? What happens when one experiences rejection? Human beings are wired for relationships. Unlike some species that do not organize socially, such as koalas and jaguars, humans need relationships. We are what Baumeister and Bushman refer to as cultural animals, immersing ourselves within social groups. Humans engage in relationships of all kinds from family, acquaintances and friends, to romantic partners. Belonging is a basic human need (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014).

Baumeister and Bushman (2014) describe belonging as a human need that requires regular contact and ongoing relationships with at least four to six people. When people have no sustainable relationships or are long distances for extended periods from those they love, whether a friend, family member, or romantic partner, they become lonely and potentially depressed. Feeling lonely and ostracized is associated with aggressive and other antisocial behaviors (Baumeister & Bushman).

As social and cultural beings, humans benefit in many ways from belongingness to a group of people. Research supports that belongingness can benefit physical health as well as mental health (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014). Support from people with whom one has stable bonds is associated with higher resistance to disease and higher rates of healing from illness and injury.
