What is the organization of the poem? Look at lines, stanzas, sentences, and/or rhyme schemes.

Two criteria you may use for evaluating sources are the validity and the relevance of the source to your topic. Read pp. 375-387 the Handbook as well as this link: Valid and Invalid Sources to learn more about what makes a source valid. Find one source in the library database on your book. Cite it and tell us why you would consider it valid. Find a source online. Cite the source accurately, and then tell us why you think this source would or would not be considered valid. To clarify: you should find a source from both a library database and an online source. Post to the dropbox by Sunday night.
Assignment 3: Poetry Analysis Questions

We are preparing for our mid-term exam, which will include a poem to analyze in an in-class essay. In order to practice this analysis, choose a poem from our text (other than one we have already read), and answer the following questions with a well-developed answer for each question giving examples from the text. Submit this assignment to the dropbox by next Wednesday.

What is the poem about? Describe the action of the poem.
Who is the speaker of the poem? It is not the author necessarily. What can you tell about the speaker from the poem?
What is the organization of the poem? Look at lines, stanzas, sentences, and/or rhyme schemes. How does that affect the meaning of the poem?
How is language used in this poem? Do you find metaphors, analogies, symbols, alliteration, figures of speech that carry connotations as well as denotations. (Connotations would be the suggested meaning as opposed to denotations which would be the literal meaning—see glossary for literary terms in The Norton.)
What do you have problems with or do not quite understand in this poem? Be as specific as possible, and look at what the section might possibly mean. (Hint: use a dictionary if a word isn’t clear; sometimes poets use a word or phrase with a different meaning than the common one.)

Join Discussion 5: Unpacking meaning in poetry. What is happening? Does the reader’s perception change from the beginning of the poem to the last? What effect do you think the author tried to convey in this poem? Respond for each poem above. Respond to two other students.

Join Discussion 6: Library Research. Access the library databases and find one source on your selected book. Give the citation for that source (see pp. 445-477 in the Handbook.) Summarize the source and its content. Report on your experiences so we can learn from one another. What search strategies and databases provided you the best results? How do you track and organize the articles you find?

(Note: Discussion 6 requires library research. The Library Resources guide, located in the Research Resources Content module, will assist you in locating appropriate article databases. It is highly recommended that you view the Academic Search Premier video which provides a good introduction to using the databases.

What is your target population? How would you identify and recruit participants?

You will apply qualitative research methods this week when you develop a qualitative research plan that seeks to answer your research problem and research question.

To prepare for this Application, first focus on the following instructions:

Review Chapter 9 in the course text, Research Design, the “Trustworthiness” handout, and “Qualitative Methods: Examples” from the Course DVD Research Theory, Design, and Methods.

Consult Table 9.1 (p. 174) in the course text, Research Methods to guide you in polishing your abbreviated qualitative research plan.

Draft an introduction for your abbreviated research plan.

Next, ask yourself the following questions:

What are your research questions? To what extent can you test them? How would you justify the viability of your questions?

Why would this design be the most appropriate for answering the research questions? Conversely, why would quantitative and mixed methods not be appropriate?

What approach would you select for this study (ethnography, grounded theory, case study, phenomenology, narrative)? Why is that approach the most appropriate one for answering the research questions?

What theoretical framework or perspective would you use?

What would be your role as the researcher?

What is your target population? How would you identify and recruit participants? What factors would contribute to determining appropriate sample size? You will not need to calculate sample size for this assignment.

If appropriate for your plan, what instruments might you need?

What data collection procedures might you use? Why would those be the most appropriate methods to use? How would that data help to answer your research question(s)?

How would you ensure quality and reliability of data?

What are threats to validity? How might you mitigate them?

How might you analyze the data?

What are the ethical considerations related to the plan?

The assignment:

Craft a 2- to 3-page paper in which you
Provide an introduction.

Provide a purpose statement.

Provide viable research questions.
Generate a written research plan that addresses the above questions.

Identify four examples of ethical behaviors and explain how your cultural heritage has shaped your values.

You are to write an ethical profile paper that recognizes the formative influence of your family, heroes, and personal style on you as an ethical professional. This paper will provide a profile of you in regards to your ethical and professional practice. You will be required to include information on who you are as an ethical professional, how this course has shaped your unique ethical decision-making style, and the areas in which you feel still need further development.

Include the following four sections in your paper:

Ethical Autobiography: First, explain how you think through and determine what is “right” and “wrong” (personally and professionally) in your own daily life. Second, identify four examples of ethical behaviors and explain how your cultural heritage has shaped your values. Third, describe the nature of the four ethical behaviors you see in yourself.
Professional/Ethical Hero: First, identify an ethical “hero,” an individual that has most impressed you and serves as your role model because of their professional/ethical presence (i.e., sensitivity, appropriate boundaries, and respect for privacy, ethical commitment, and ethical courage). Elaborate on his or her ethical characteristics. Discuss how this person can (or does) serve as a role model for others in the helping profession. Second, describe how this “hero” has influenced your value system. Click here to read an article on ethical hero.
Ethical Decision-Making Style: This section will articulate your implicit style in terms of ethical decision making. Although there are specific models that help facilitate ethical decision making, everyone has his or her own unique style. Taking into consideration the ethical decision-making models presented in this course, identify the style that reflects your early and ongoing experiences with moral values and issues that has been influenced and shaped by your parents, relatives, peers, and valued adults in your life, such as a teacher or coach. Use what you have written from your autobiography to supplement this discussion. In summary, explain your implicit ethical decision-making style, including how this course and your cultural heritage have served as influential factors.
Professional and Ethical Development: Ethical development is, for most, a career-long process. In the last section of your paper, please identify at least two areas discussed in this module/course where you feel you would benefit from more development. Lastly, suggest ways in which you can acquire your further development.

Please include information from two or more external scholarly references using APA formatting for all citations.

Your paper should be approximately 6–8 pages in length, be double-spaced, in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal 1” margins; be written in APA style; and be free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page
