You are an economist for the Vanda-Laye Corporation, which produces and distributes outdoor cooking supplies. The company has come under new ownership and management and will be undergoing changes in its product lines and operating structure. As an economist, your responsibilities include examining the market factors that affect success or failure of a product, including the supply and demand for the product, market conditions, and the behavior of competitors with similar products.

Your supervisor, Jorge, has assigned you the task of evaluating a new product. The new product, oven mittens, has several competitors in the marketplace, but your company will be using a new patented material that provides protection from heat and maintains a great deal of flexibility. The supply and demand functions for oven mittens are as follows:

Qd = 45 – 6.9P

Qs = –15 + 10P

where Qd is the quantity demanded, Qs the quantity supplied, and P the price.

Tasks:

Jorge has asked you to research the market and provide detailed responses to the following questions:

What is the equilibrium price and quantity for oven mittens? Using Microsoft Excel, construct a table that shows the quantity demanded, the quantity supplied, and the surplus or shortage associated with prices from $2 to $5.55. (Use appropriate intervals.) Indicate the level at which equilibrium is achieved. Graph the data, indicating the equilibrium level and the areas of shortage or surplus.
If a price floor were established at $4, what would happen in this market? Explain your answer.
If a price ceiling were established at $3, what would happen in this market? Explain your answer.
What will happen to the demand curve for the product if the following changes occur? Answer separately for each change, assuming each event to be independent of the other

This assignment brings developmental theory to life through live observation. You will have the opportunity to practice making service recommendations for a family based on the developmental prognosis of the individual you observe.

Tasks:

Conduct a forty-five- to sixty-minute live observation of a young adult. In addition to conducting an observation, you may also choose to interview the young adult. Keep in mind the following guidelines:

Only use first names or pseudonyms in your paper.
Do not observe someone who is related to you.
Do not attempt to engage in a counseling role; this assignment strictly involves only observing or interviewing.

Write a 3- to 4-page detailed description of the young adult’s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development. What would developmental theorists say about the cognitive and the psychosocial development of the young adult? In addition, include the following information:

Date, time, location, and length of observation
Age, sex, and race or ethnicity
Defining physical characteristics
Estimated socioeconomic status (SES)
Description of interaction with caregivers
Daily routine
Description of other relevant behaviors exhibited during observation
Any other information

Note that SES has a profound impact on development. You can estimate the SES level based on neighborhood, clothing, or automobiles.

Be sure to provide detailed examples and use multiple developmental theories to support your observations. Consider multicontextual influences on development. Also, provide a developmental prognosis and make service recommendations, if needed. Justify your recommendations with information from the textbook, recommended readings, and/or peer-reviewed journal articles.

If you determine no services are needed, provide a justification. For example, if the young adult you observe is not meeting the developmental milestones associated with young adulthood, provide suggestions for services that would promote healthy development.

Note: Do not share a prognosis or service recommendations with the young adult. This information is for class purposes only. Also keep in mind that the more familiar you are with the relevant developmental theory for this age range, the more you will know what is significant during your observation.

By Wednesday, January 27, 2016, prepare a 3- to 4-page paper. Your response should rely upon at least two sources from professional literature. This may include the Argosy University online library resources, relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, or .gov). Write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources (i.e., APA format); and use accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

You will be applying the concepts from the background materials to your own personal workplace experiences. For this assignment, think of two former or current coworkers that had unique personalities. Choose two people that you worked with closely enough that you were able to get a good idea of their personality traits and workplace attitudes.

Review the main personality traits and attitudes from the background materials, and think about how these apply to your two coworkers. Then write a three page paper addressing the following issues:

How would you describe the personalities of these two coworkers? Use the Big Five Personality traits and other personality traits discussed in Chapter 6 of Nair (2010) to find the personality traits that best describe your coworkers. You must use specific personality traits that you found in the background readings for your answer.

How would you describe their workplace attitudes including job satisfaction and organizational commitment? Use the concepts from Chapter 4 of Nair (2010) in your answer.

Do you think their personality traits impacted their workplace attitudes, or did other factors such as the work environment, job characteristics, etc. have a greater impact on their attitudes?

Due to the increasingly complex nature of corporate finance, more and more corporations are tapping their chief financial officer to become their chief executive officer. The CFO brings substantial financial expertise to the position of CEO. However, there may be other reasons why the CFO is not necessarily the best person to become the CEO.

Please note that the CFO must have an external orientation: After all, the company is owned by its shareholders and if the company is to operate so as to raise the value of the shares it must consider not only the internal structure of the organization, its products, competitors etc., but it must consider the interaction between what the company ‘does’, and the way the ‘market’ evaluates its performance. It is the combination of the two that plays a role in affecting the market price of the shares and shareholders value. The individuals who must have an eye on this are usually the CEO and the CFO.

Abstract: Positions of power within corporates are highly sought after, and today’s chief financial officers and finance directors are increasingly becoming aware that they now have a realistic opportunity of becoming CEO. Part of the reason for the trend towards recruiting CFOs who can behave as strategic partners is that the investor community looks much more critically at the business performance and management strengths and weaknesses of corporates. This strategic positioning gives them an opportunity to buff up their image, and make themselves seen as a more credible candidate to take over the CEO role.

Abstract: With the proliferation of corporate takeovers, leveraged buyouts, and restructuring in the US, it would seem that chief financial officers (CFO) hold the keys to executive wisdom. Recruiters report a growing trend of grooming CFOs for chief executive officer (CEO) positions, with some estimating that nearly 25% of top corporate leaders are former CFOs. Analysts, academics, and headhunters agree that the ideal CEO communicates well, is adept at managing managers, understands the company’s product and operations, and provides a consistent vision. A recent survey by Management Practices Quarterly reveals that, of 83 new CEOs appointed in 1988, more than 18% came from operations-production backgrounds, some 23% had technical training, while only 14.4% had a financial background. D. Wayne Calloway, who became CEO of PepsiCo in May 1986, was formerly the company’s CFO and is probably the best example of the valuable experience CFOs can bring to the CEO position.

Read the two articles above, look for newer articles on the subject by browsing the web and then write a two-page paper answering the following question:

Do you think finance departments are the best place to train future CEOs? Provide two actual examples of CFOs of publicly-traded companies who became CEOs of publicly-traded companies within the past 5 years. Do these individuals have the CPA and/or CFA designations?

Include a discussion of both the pros and cons of hiring a CFO to be CEO. Try to cite at least three articles in your paper in support of your arguments in favor of and against hiring a CFO to be a CEO. Remember to include a reference list and to refer to the articles you use in the body of your paper.

You now need to write a script for user maintenance. Write a script that will perform the following tasks:

Prompt the system administrator for all valid input parameters
Generate a menu to ask which task is needed to be performed
Create a UNIX group
Drop a UNIX group
Create a user
Drop a user

Note that as part of the Create User section, a UNIX group many be identified that does not already exist, so that group will need to be created as part of the process.

A third script that you need to write will kill all of the processes associated with a user. The following are the requirements:

Prompt the system administrator for the target user name
List the running processes for that user
Confirm with the system administrator before killing the processes
Kill the processes after confirmation

It is very important to note with this task that you should only kill processes for a user and his or her running processes; do not arbitrarily kill running daemons.
