Explain what it takes to be an ethical leader. Make sure to include in your discussion the different aspects that make an ethical leader. Give examples of leaders that you think are ethical.

Design Basics Used to Create Balance

The Chinese have a theory that you pass through boredom into fascination and I think it’s true. I would never choose a subject for what it means to me or what I think about it. You’ve just got to choose a subject, and what you feel about it, what it means, begins to unfold if you just plain choose a subject and do it enough.

Diane Arbus was a highly original photographer who has greatly influenced the course of contemporary photography. In her Photography: A Cultural History (2002), Mary Warner Marien writes:

Arbus turned normalcy on its head, making the ordinary bizarre and naturalizing the unusual. In her photographs of people, many of them made while she roamed the streets of New York, clothes and cosmetics are futile efforts to camouflage psychic emptiness or damage. When Arbus photographed children, she revealed them as little versions of bad-tempered, mean-spirited adults. […] On the other hand, her photographs of people at the margins of society, such as female impersonators, show them to be more virtuous for having unmasked their subjective inclinations. For Arbus, marginal people were symbols for her own psychological fragility and trauma (p. 352).

The thematic power of Arbus’s work is based on the masterful composition of her subject matter, balancing key elements within a square frame format, which is uniquely identified with her mature style.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review Chapters 2 and 3 in your course text, The Photographer’s Eye.
Review Diane Arbus’s photograph, Child with Toy Hand Grenade, 1962.
Review the websites from this week’s Learning Resources for more inspiration and examples of photographs.
Consider the following questions regarding the Arbus photograph:
How does the use of a square frame impact the balance of the photograph?
What elements contribute to the balance of the photograph presented here? Would you say this is a balanced photograph? Explain your response.
Does this composition draw your eyes more to the center of the frame or more to the edges? Give evidence for your response.
How does the photograph demonstrate contrast, tension, rhythm, and/or depth?
How does the subject of the photograph relate to the background?
How is perspective created in the photograph?
Is the photograph more weighted toward information or emotion? Explain your response.
While considering the questions above, compare the assigned photograph with Arbus’s 1967 photograph, Identical Twins, Roselle, N.J., 1967. Explain how these photographs differ and how they are similar.

You have been working as a police officer for the Centervale Police Department for two years. You are on your nightly patrol in your marked police vehicle with your partner, Edward, who has been on the force for seven years. You receive a call on the radio to respond to a domestic abuse situation requiring backup. Your partner and you are second to respond to the call. You arrive at the scene, which is in a neighborhood with a bad reputation. Upon arrival, you witness a couple, Abby and Bobby, standing outside their house, yelling obscenities at each other.

The couple refuses to calm down and speak with the officers, Christina and David, who are already on the scene. The girlfriend, Abby, is slurring her speech and seems unaware of the trickle of blood running down the side of her head. The boyfriend, Bobby, has extremely bloodshot eyes and does not appear to have slept in days. Moreover, Bobby’s speech is accelerated, and he’s breathing rapidly as if he has just sprinted from the drugstore down the block. You notice that Bobby’s hands and face have scratches all over them.

Also, the front door is open.

Your partner, Edward, has known this couple as they have been in trouble with the law before. He steps in between Abby and Bobby and begins to gather information from Abby, while you call for an ambulance.

As Edward speaks with the couple, you begin to walk around the yard, observing what you can. You look in through the front door, and while there is only one light on in the house, you observe what appears to be a bong and a baggie of marijuana on the coffee table in the front room of the house. Because Edward is standing with Abby and there are two other officers outside with Bobby, you decide to enter the house to take a closer look.

You discover that there is indeed a bong and a baggie of marijuana on the table. Looking under the couch next to the coffee table, you discover a shotgun as well. You begin to wonder what other illegal items might be in the house, when you hear a yell from outside and run out to discover that Bobby is being handcuffed and put in a police car. Apparently, Bobby tried to use a weapon on Abby in front of Edward and the other officers.

He is quoted as saying, “Just because the cops are here doesn’t mean I won’t finish what I started!” as he reached for his waistband.

As Bobby is being driven away, Abby breaks down into tears and cries out after her boyfriend, “Don’t worry, baby! I’ll come bail you out as soon as I can turn a little profit with the goods!”

You tell your partner what you observed in the house. After the paramedics declare that Abby’s head injury is nothing more than a bad scratch, your partner and you drive Abby down to the police precinct for further questioning, leaving Christina and David at the scene to secure it until more investigation can be done.

What You Need to Do . . .

Utilizing APA guidelines and citing relevant case law and specific details from external sources, present a 4- to 6-page research paper that explains what you need to do next with respect to the evidence left behind at the scene. In addition, consider what you need to do with any other evidence you may discover at the precinct from Abby and Bobby or on their persons. As you consider your next steps, address the following issues:

Do you have probable cause to arrest Abby for any crime? Explain.
What information, if any, must you list on an affidavit to secure a search warrant for Abby and Bobby’s house?
What actions (or inactions) taken by officers Christina and David were relevant with respect to the evidence you discovered on the scene?
What is the scope of your warrant?
Should you search Abby and Bobby upon their arrival at the precinct? What do you expect to discover on their persons and at the crime scene? How will you obtain evidence that may or may not be found on Abby and Bobby’s person? For instance, they may have drugs in their pockets, or Bobby may have another weapon on his person.

How has the theory of personality evolved from the work of Freud to the present day? Based on your understanding of the different theories, what impact will the growing use of social media have on personality?

Begin your discussion with a summary of your work from the short paper in Module Three to compare Freud and Jung’s perspectives with those of Adler and Erickson. Then expand the discussion of personality theory development to consider the influences of feminist theory and the contemporary theorists Rotter, Zuckerman and Seligman. Milestones Milestone One: Perceptions of Personality In Module Three, you will submit a Perceptions of Personality paper discussing how Freud and Jung define the term personality. How does culture influence views of personality?

Compare similarities and differences in Freud’s and Jung’s theories of personality and dream analysis. Freud and Jung were raised in very different circumstances. How did those differences affect their theories of personality? How robust are their theories in assessing personality across different cultures and times?

Provide a specific example referring to research on the personality of a famous figure (e.g., Hitler, Gandhi) and whether Freudian or Jungian psychology applies. This milestone is graded with the Milestone One Rubric.

Milestone Two: Article Critique In Module Five, you will submit a detailed article critique of an article from a relevant psychology journal. Provide both objective and subjective analyses. This milestone is graded with the Milestone Two Rubric. Final Submission: The Evolution of Personality Theory Through the Ages Paper In Module Seven, you will submit an Evolution of Personality Theory Through the Ages paper describing the evolution of personality theory from Freud to the present day. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final project. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. This submission will be graded using the Final Product Rubric (below).

Final Product Rubric Guidelines for Submission: Written components of projects must follow these formatting guidelines when applicable: 10–12 pages, double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and the paper must follow APA format. A minimum of three academic, peer-reviewed sources must be referenced in your paper.

Have you seen any films that you would have classified as “World Cinema” before reading Lucia Nagib’s essay, “Towards a Positive Definition of World Cinema”? But to increase the potential and probability of lasting change, a person or organization needs to learn how to direct, motivate, and shape certain aspects of the change process. One way to direct the process of change is to find the Bright Spots. Based upon the content found in chapter 2 of the text, complete the following components:
