Discussion 1: Summarizing Material

Provide a summary of one of the assigned stories. Make sure your summary addresses the following questions.



Setting: where and when does the story takes place?



Characterization: who are the main characters? Who is the protagonist, antagonist, supporting characters?



Narration: who is telling the story? Is it a third person omniscient narrator or is it a character narrator?



Plot: What is the central issue in the story? What is the conflict? How is it resolved?

Make sure the summary provides a topic sentence that establishes a context for your reader. Keep the summary brief – no more than 5-6 sentences. Then respond to two other students’ summaries. Does it adequately address the story? Is it missing an element? Does it provide too much information that is irrelevant for a summary?

Discussion 2: What is Critical Analysis?

Literary criticism implies close reading more than evaluative judgment about a work of literature. Read in

The Norton Introduction to Literature about different critical approaches in analyzing literature, pp. 1228-1332.

Look up the term online and see what you can come up with as an understanding of what you are to do in writing a critical analysis of a piece of literature.

Leadership Styles

In this assignment, you will study the characteristics that mark each leadership style.

Identify five leaders from the lists given in Appendix A.

You must select one leader’s name from List 7.

You must select one leader’s name from List 4.

Select the remaining three leaders from Lists 1, 2, 3, 5, or 6. Ensure you select only one name from a list.

Share reasons for your selection of leaders.

Using the Internet, research about the following:

Biographies of the chosen leaders
Historical events associated with the chosen leaders

Based on your research and readings, compile a 7-to 8-page Microsoft Word that includes answers to the following questions:

What were the characteristics of your chosen leaders?
What were the factors that contributed to each individual rising to the role of leader?
What was each selected leader’s leadership style? Support your position with credible references with respect to the style, and include an accurate biography and depiction of historical events.

This exercise will help you become more proficient at recognizing, translating, and evaluating if and and statements. In this assignment, find two examples for the exercise; translate the claims of the example into symbolic form; identify an if or anand statement; then assess it.

Note: Translation and assessment are tools we use to categorize statements. Therefore, you will not be penalized if, through translation and assessment, you learn a statement that appeared to be an if or an and statement is a statement of another type.

The completed assignment must contain the original claims, your translation of the claims into logical form, and your assessment of the statement in logical form. The original examples should be three to five sentences in length.

Your assessment should include answers to the following questions:

Is the set of claims an argument?
Is the original claim (when translated) an if . . . then or and statement?
Did the translation of the original claims reveal the statement was a different kind of statement than you originally believed?

Remember, you will also need to provide a translation key to explain the symbols you use.

Since 2001, the role of the United States in the world has been at times championed as well as criticized; we are either loved or hated, so it seems. Speculate on the “standing” of America in the world today: are we still a superpower or have we lost our strength? Consider such important events as the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks, the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, issues pertaining to illegal immigration, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and our response to ISIS as well as Russian aggression in the Ukraine.

PART II – SHORT RESEARCH PAPER

Directions: Please search for two research articles that will serve as the basis for your homework this week.

Research the history of your family as far back as you can. Determine at what point your family moved to the United States and for what reasons (which is hallmark of cultural geography). Include the following:

When did your family originally arrive in the United States?
Where did they settle?
What reasons do you know or think that they settled for?
What social processes from your ancestors’ home country (e.g., unemployment, religious persecution) drove them to the United States? Did any other factors compel your family to move to the United States (e.g., poor economic conditions in the home country, frequent natural disasters, etc).

Your essay should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced, and APA-formatted.

2. For each management system element, discuss the objective evidence you found (or were unable to find).

Evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s implementation of each element against available reference sources and best practice information. Use the following five-tier evaluation scheme to rate each element:
 World Class: OHS performance
 Strong: Conforming/complete, may have minor gaps with action plans
 Moderate: Scattered non-conformances need to be addressed, positive trends/major elements in place
 Significant Non-Conformances Exist: Still needs focus
 Major Effort Required: Major or systemic non-conformances exist

Appropriate references include the course textbook, textbooks from other college-level courses, ANSI/AIHA Z10-2012, other published consensus standards (ANSI, ASSE, AIHA, ISO, NFPA, etc.), OSHA standards and voluntary guidelines, and articles published in professional journals. 3. If an element is found to be less than World Class, provide recommendations for improvement. Be sure to use appropriate scholarly reference sources to support your recommendations.

4. Conclude the audit report with a summary of the overall status of the organization’s safety management system.

The Course Project must be a minimum of seven pages and a maximum of 10 pages in length, not including the title, abstract, and reference pages. A minimum of five professional references sources must be used.

Review the annotated journal article “Developing Long-Term Physical Activity Participation: A Grounded Theory Study With African American Women,” which is annotated to reveal the how an introduction and purpose statement function.
Look to the Introduction Checklist and Purpose Statement Checklist for more guidance in analyzing and evaluating the introduction and purpose statement in your assigned article.
Identify the purpose for research in your article according to the nine purposes of research found in “A Typology of Research Purposes and Its Relationship to Mixed Methods.” It is possible that your assigned article may have more than one purpose.
Assess and evaluate the introductions and purpose statements. As part of the evaluation, be sure to describe how well the introduction achieves its purpose and, if applicable, include suggestions for improvement.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a 3-paragraph analysis and evaluation of the article’s introduction and purpose statement. Be sure to include which one (or more, if applicable) of the nine purposes for research from “A Typology of Research Purposes and Its Relationship to Mixed Methods” the article represents. Then, in a final paragraph, ask any questions you may have about introductions and purpose statements.

Amanda Knox was an American student in her early 20’s studying abroad at a university in Perugia, Italy. In November 2007 she was arrested, later charged and in 2009 she was found guilty of the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher. In 2011, an appellate court reviewed the matter and she was released from prison and allowed to return home to the United States.

This case received exclusive media attention all over the world. Much discussion has been had over the murder and the police and the forensic investigations, the statements and confessions of the parties involved, the trial and the appeal, prison conditions and also about the judicial pretrial publicity and the impact on the trial.

In a 3-5-page paper, and using APA style formatting, analyze this case in detail in terms of how it was handled in the Italian court system. Discuss in detail the appellate process that was employed. You must use outside and supporting sources and make sure to properly cite any outside sources that you use.

Discuss whether or not the U.S. police and court systems would have handled the case differently and, if so, how would it have been handled. Would the outcome have likely been different in the United States? Would the prison sentence have been different? What does this case say about prison conditions? What about the handling of the appeal within the two systems – how does that differ?

Finally, select one of the four major legal systems in the world: Civil law, socialist law, Islamic law, and common law. Suppose that you are advising an individual travelling to a county which follows each of these different systems – what advice would you give this individual in terms of how these systems differ and why? How does the system that you selected handle appeals
