The Dosit Corporation is a chemical manufacturer, and its products are sold to other manufacturers and used in household cleaning products. The company has 290 employees with about 220 involved in the production process, 30 working as maintenance personnel, and the remainder in clerical, sales, engineering, and senior management positions. The company has never had a safety manager before it recently hiring you. The company president instructed you to find out what is wrong regarding safety and health and then to fix it. Several binders and files have been given to you with the explanation that they are the existing safety policies and records. Looking through one folder, you find a chemical inventory list from two years ago that included 780 chemicals. You find no records of hazard communication training, and the existing written program is very minimal and inadequate. You went on a tour of your company’s chemical processing area with the production foreman. As with any such operations, there are pipes going everywhere and numerous tanks. You noticed that few of the pipes and none of the tanks have visible labels indicating what is in the tanks or pipes.

Our initial decision to locate our China operations in Hangzhou was driven largely by the fact

that our Chinese partners already had facilities there and the city’s proximity to the Qiantang

River. We thought that the river access which led on to Hangzhou Bay would be sufficient to handle our shipping needs.

As the production volume from the China plant has increased, we are seeing that significant

savings can be had by utilizing container shipping companies such as the China Shipping Container Lines, a branch of the China Shipping (Group) Company. Most of the container shipping companies utilize ports in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

While the Shanghai port is only 180 kilometers away from our current location, we are incurring additional logistical steps in shipping out of Shanghai.

Currently, our products are trucked to a port on the Qiantang River and loaded into shipping containers. The containers are then loaded onto barges that make their way to the Shanghai port. The barges dock in Shanghai where the containers are offloaded and trucked to another area of the port where they are loaded onto to the ships that will take them to their final destinations.

Alternatively, we could transport the products by truck to the port at Shanghai where they would be loaded into containers and then directly onto the ships that will be taking them to their final destinations. However, the trucking companies, knowing that they are being used as an alternative to the local shipping companies to move the same products to the Shanghai ports, generally charge just as much as the shipping companies for the same volume of goods.

We believe that the relocation of the China operations to the city of Shanghai will result in

significant cost savings, will provide our operations with a more substantial urban infrastructure and will put us into a better position to market and ship our Chinese products throughout Asia and Europe.

Landlord-Tenant Law Worth 220 points HINT: See Chapters 29 and 30 of the text to help understand some of the legal issues covered in this assignment. Larry Landlord has recently renovated an apartment and has put it on the market to be rented for $800.00 a month. Larry Landlord has been in business for approximately five (5) years and has had both positive and negative experiences with tenants. Larry Landlord is hoping to find a good, long-term tenant for his apartment. Roger Renter saw Larry’s sign for the apartment for rent and thought the location and the apartment would be perfect. Roger met Larry to look at the apartment and Roger fell in love with it. All of the interior fixtures had been replaced and the unit had a nice large closet. Roger noticed that although newly painted, the exterior of the apartment did show a little bit of wear. Because of the condition of the exterior of the building, Roger asked Larry about any roof leaks. Larry stated that he had never had a leak and was not aware of any leaks. Roger and Larry entered into a valid contract for the rental of the apartment. (Note: The issue of whether or not a contract exists is NOT part of this question. For purposes of this question assume the contract is valid and there are no issues with the contract.)  Roger Renter was very happy in his new location; the apartment was quiet and the neighbors were friendly. Larry Landlord was also very happy because Roger Renter was a model tenant. Roger Renter paid on time and was quiet and respectful to other tenants. The part of the country where Roger rented was rainy in the summertime. Roger rented and moved into the apartment in October. In June, a tremendous rainstorm occurred and Roger’s roof began to leak. The leak was minor at first and Roger merely put a trash can under the leak and had no other issues that month. When handing over his monthly rent check, Roger told Larry about the small leak. Throughout our unit on Violence and Popular Culture, we have seen multiple perspectives on the role of violence and cinema in American society, from critical to praising and from dismissive to conflicted cultural analysis. Now, it is your turn to place your voice within this conversation. What do you think about these discussions? Are there some writers that you agree with? Others that you think have problems in their analysis? Are there ideas that you think they are all overlooking?
