The Session Long Project entails you going through the process of influencing policymakers. In your first three SLP assignments you wrote a letter to “raise a concern,” “oppose a position,” and “support a position.” While these are direct ways of influencing policymakers by letter writing, there are additional indirect ways that can also achieve your objectives. Some ways are writing a letter to the editor or “Op-Eds.” Policymakers read local newspapers opinion sections and letters to the editor as a way of tracking how the people feel about particular issues (Connecticut Health Policy, 2013b). This week’s required reading from the Connecticut Health Policy toolbox covers both letters to the editor and “Op-Eds.”

Your Task

Part 1:

For this SLP assignment, you are asked to write a one-page letter to the editor.

1. Choose any topic that is related to the category stated in SLP 1
2. Pick a local newspaper to write to (you can use your hometown paper if you desire). Provide the name of the newspaper and the city.

Part 2:

3. Write one page of text on tips for writing a letter to the editor.
4. What are some advantages of writing a letter to the editor compared to the letters from SLP 1–3 assignments?

The public health field encompasses a number of different sectors and one valuable area is crisis and emergency risk communication. When a problem arises, public health communicators need to take quick and accurate steps in order to divert or control disaster. We have seen this first hand with H1N1 flu and SARS outbreaks. It is important to understand steps that can be taken ahead of time, so when an emergency occurs you can react with effective procedures.
Case Assignment

For this case assignment, you will be using the CDC Risk Communication resource provided in your required readings section.

Step 1: Go to the website and under Risk Communication, click on “Emergency Preparedness and Response.”

Step 2: Read through the information on this page and then under Specific Hazards, click on “Recent Outbreaks & Incidents.

Step 3: Under “Select a Year,” click on 2014

Step 4: Choose one of the recent outbreaks

In your paper:

Identify the incident/outbreak you chose from 2014 for which risk communication was essential.
Describe the situation that occurred and some statistics to display the severity of the incident.
What types of communication/procedures were used during this incident? Provide examples on the information that was disseminated and how it aided in the situation.

Using the media as a tool can be powerful when promoting a health program. There are a number of steps that need to be taken in order to effectively disseminate a message out to the group you are trying to influence. Media advocacy and social marketing are useful resources a health educator can use in a number of different ways and for a number of different reasons. For example, social marketing may be used to influence individual behavior where as media advocacy might be utilized when attempting to influence policy makers (CFOC, 2008).

Case Assignment

1. Identify the steps you would take when designing a social media campaign (provide 5-6 steps, use your required readings as a guide, and use bold headings to clearly identify each step.)
2. Describe each step you indentified and its importance when designing a media campaign.

This case study looks at the behavior of a circuit board process through the use of control charts. At least two control charts will need to be constructed, and from them, you will be asked to provide an assessment of what you see. A template to facilitate the construction of the control charts has been attached.You are not required to use this template; however, it will greatly facilitate the solution.

Problem Statement

Fujiyama Electronics Inc. has had difficulties with circuit boards purchased from an outside supplier. Unacceptable variability occurs between two drilled holes that are supposed to be 5 cm apart on the circuit boards. Thirty samples of four boards each were taken from shipments from the supplier. The data obtained can be found on a attached.

Guidelines

The students will complete and answer the following questions.

1. Calculate X-bar-bar, R-bar, and associated control limits using the data in the table above.

2. Create x̄ and R (average and range) control charts from the data in the table above.

3. Discuss notable out-of-control conditions displayed in the completed x̄ and R (average and range) control charts. Only consider points outside the control limits. Do not consider runs, set of points within certain zones, and so forth.

4. If the conditions you note could be defined as assignable conditions, and they are removed from the process, then what will happen to the X-bar and R control chart?

1. Remove the data related to the out-of-control points you observed from the original data, and recalculate new X-bar-bar, R-bar, and associated control limits.

2. Create new X-bar and R (average and range) control charts from your updated data.

5. Discuss how the two sets of control charts are different. What has changed?
