Select a concept that you care about and that you may want to do your final research paper on- and perhaps you even want to work on this issue in your future career! Now, find two dependent variables (DV) that are attempts to measure that concept. One must be interval and one must be ordinal. One must be interval and one must be ordinal (got it?). 2. Think critically about what independent variables may affect your dependent variables and why. Conduct a brief literature review. What do other scholars argue affects your dependent variable?

3. YOUR TURN! HYPOTHESIS
Craft two hypotheses on your DVs of interest. Then, select potential intervening variables that may affect your relationship between your IV and DV. YOU CANNOT HAVE AN INTERVAL VARIABLE AS AN INTERVENING VRIABLE
Revise and write down the two hypotheses and indicate: the independent variable, the intervening variable, and the dependent variable in each one.

4. Presenting data well is key to good research. Thus, often you need to recode variables in order to make the information digestible. Also, this helps you refine your research. SPECIFY the relationships you want to investigate. For example, if you think age affects attitudes towards illegal immigrants, can you refine your hypothesis so that it is not all AGES but rather a specific Age that you think is critical for your hypothesis? Such as those over and under 50? Simplify and specify!!!! Most independent and intervening variables should have no more than 4 categories, preferably 3 or less. You want to test a SPECIFIC relationship. So, narrow it down!
Recode your variables into new variables that are more specific.

5. DATA: ORDINAL DEPENDENT VARIABLE HYPOTHESIS: Run a cross tabs analysis for your hypothesis with ordinal dependent variable. One time with the intervening variable, one time without. Be sure to place your independent and dependent variables on the correct axis and to include appropriate percentages.

6. TEST FOR SIGNIFICANCE. Run at least three tests that measure association between the independent and dependent variable (Lambda, Chi-Square, Kendall’s tau-b, Kendall’s tau-c, and/or Somer’s D depending on your variables).
What do you find? Is the relationship significant? Interpret your results.

Extra Credit: Run the tests with an intervening variable and interpret the relationship.

7. INTERVAL DEPENDENT VARIABLE HYPOTHESIS: Run a compare means analysis for your dependent variable that is interval, including your intervening variable. For the dependent interval variable, create a LINE GRAPH to demonstrate a relationship with the independent and intervening variable represented.

8. TEST FOR SIGNIFICANCE. Run a independent sample T-Test.
What do you find? Is the relationship significant? Interpret your results.

9. ANALYSIS: What do your cross-tabs and compare means tests results suggest? Interpret your findings in connection to your hypothesis. WHY do you think this relationship is (or is not significant)? Topic: We focused on three content units this semester: Higher Education (Unit 1), Social Media and Education (Unit 2), and Media Literacy (Unit 3). Your essay should integrate ideas from at least two of these units. Also, the essay should include information (quotations, paraphrases, and/or summaries) from at least one source per unit.

An example of a synthesis essay topic might be “Social media can help international students solve adjustment issues when they study abroad.” This essay addresses concepts from Units 1 and 2. Procedure:

Step 1: Essay preparation and writing

Gather your class materials from the three units we’ve studied. Look for connections between the sources we’ve used. Write down all the ideas that come into your mind and then go back and narrow them down until you find the topic you’re most interested in writing about. Your synthesis of the selected sources will comprise the body of your essay.
Formulate an idea about the topic that is new and hasn’t been addressed in the class sources. Support this new idea with personal experience or other class sources/discussions. Your new idea will comprise the conclusion of the essay.
Find a way to introduce your essay that gives general information about the topic you’ve chosen and its significance. You should also introduce any texts you plan to use in the essay
Step 2: Write and revise your paper

Using the notes/thoughts you have from Step 1, write your paper.
Take a look at the paper and be sure it follows all the guidelines on the assignment sheet and the scoring rubric.
Remember that you must include an appropriate reference to the sources each time you refer to them.

You are a new associate at the law firm of Dewey, Chetum, and Howe. John, a former researcher at PharmaCARE, comes to your office. He has concerns about PharmaCARE’s use of AD23, one of the company’s top-selling diabetes drugs. Two (2) years ago, after PharmaCARE’s research indicated that AD23 might also slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, John and his team of pharmacists began reformulating the drug to maximize that effect. In order to avoid the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) scrutiny, PharmaCARE established a wholly-owned subsidiary, CompCARE, to operate as a compounding pharmacy to sell the new formulation to individuals on a prescription basis. CompCARE established itself in a suburban office park near its parent’s headquarters. To conserve money and time, CompCARE did a quick, low-cost renovation.

CompCARE benefited from PharmaCARE’s reputation, databases, networks, and sales and marketing expertise, and within six (6) months had the medical community buzzing about AD23. Demand soared, particularly among Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans Affairs patients. Seeing the opportunity to realize even more profit, CompCARE began advertising AD23 directly to consumers and marketing the drug directly to hospitals, clinics, and physician offices, even though compounding pharmacies are not permitted to sell drugs in bulk for general use. To circumvent this technicality, CompCARE encouraged doctors to fax lists of fictitious patient names to CompCARE. PharmaCARE sold CompCARE to WellCo, a large drugstore chain, just weeks before AD23 was publicly linked to over 200 cardiac deaths.

As CompCARE and its new parent company enjoyed record profits and PharmaCARE’s stock price approached $300 per share, reports started surfacing that people who received AD23 seemed to be suffering heart attacks at an alarming rate. The company ignored this data and continued filling large orders and paying huge bonuses to all the executives and managers, including John, whose wife recently died from a heart attack after using AD23.
