Guide to Writing Literature Reviews

Assignment Conception:

Literature Reviews gives students the opportunity to show their comprehension of assigned readings. Lit-Reviews also help students develop critical writing and reading skills. Successful lit-reviews show that students have read, comprehended the main concepts of an author’s argument and show the ability to critique and/or analyze the ideas being set forth by assigned authors. Thus, students are asked to be critical readers as well as analyzers of given arguments and concepts espoused by scholars.

Directions:

Lit-Reviews should consist of at least four major paragraphs. (See the creation of 5-step paragraphs below as a good guide)

Paragraph 1:

Introduce the scholar’s general topic and its relevance in contemporary society, academic study, or specific field.

What is the author’s overarching argument?

What is his/her concern?

What is the Big Picture concept in the essay?

Paragraph 2:

What resources, studies, or evidence provided by the author?

Analyze the author’s research and provide an example (quote from the reading)

Why is the quote or evidence you present important? Explain?

Paragraph 3:

What is the author missing?

What other views that could have been discussed?

Is the author’s argument bias?

Provide an alternative viewpoint and scholarship.

Paragraph 4:

What do you conclude from the author’s argument?

What are some new ideas or directions that the author can follow or develop?

What community or communities’ best served with this scholarship?

5-step process to paragraph development

Step 1. Decide on a controlling idea and create a topic sentence

Step 2. Explain the controlling idea

Step 3. Give an example (or multiple examples)

Step 4. Explain the example(s)

Step 5. Complete the paragraph’s idea or transition into the next paragraph

Produce a family tree for at least three generations of your family, a friend’s family, or a famous family such as the Bushes, Clintons, or Barrymores, following these genetic traits:

Eye color
Hair color
Dominant hand
Height
Widow’s peak
Hitchhiker’s thumb
A family genetic disorder (this is not required and should only be provided at one’s discretion)

Summarize the inheritance of sex-linked traits through meiosis and how it relates to genetics.

Create a 5- to 6-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation illustrating your findings and summarizing the inheritance of sex-linked traits

Write a practical article, designed for ELT teachers which addresses cultural tips, techniques or other issues in the ESL/EFL classroom.

B. The length requirement is 1000 words or more, not including references. Consult your publication of choice for their length restrictions and do not exceed them. Include the publishing guidelines when turning in your paper.

C. A Project Proposal is due during Week #8. Your proposal should include:

1. A one-paragraph statement that describes the purpose of your paper.

2. An outline of the article describing 1) the rationale, 2) the implications and 3) suggestions for the classroom teacher.

3. A list of references including at least 3 sources that relate to your selections. Use references of class readings as long as they relate clearly to your topic. Include outside readings also.

D. A suggested newsletter is TESOL Connections http://www.tesol.org/read-and-publish/newsletters-other-publications/tesol-connections/submit-features-or-resources-for-tesol-connections .

Other possibilities include: CATESOL Journal, RELC, and ELT Journal. Find their authors’ guidelines online.

E. Description: TESOL Connections require “featured articles” that are 900-1200 words and that: (The following list is taken directly from the website.)

1. Are practical in nature and written for a general ELT audience. (Please keep in mind that this is a newsletter article and not a research article, though you are welcome to include resources and research recommendations at the end.)

2. Highlight some features of ELT that play a role in the everyday classroom—if possible, on various levels.

3. Incorporate important points that educators can take away and use.

4. Are about innovative, unusual, or interesting things you have found in your years of experience in ELT

5. Trends in ELT and how they might influence teaching (positively or negatively)

6. Useful, tested classroom practice tips or strategies

Discuss the following as they pertain to qualitative research:

Reflexivity and Researcher’s Voice. How will you address these two items in regard to your project? ( Leader’s Attitude on Employee Performance)

By Tuesday, December 1, 2015 post your response. All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.

 

Assignment 2: Final Project

 

Now that you are familiar with three of the approaches to qualitative analysis, coding and analyses, select one that would be best suited for the phenomena you described in Module 1. Create the final project paper. This should demonstrate your understanding of qualitative research and should be edited and revised according to feedback previously received. Describe your phenomena, the approach you have selected, develop three research questions pertaining to your phenomena, and describe why that approach would be well suited to your topic. Include details on methodology, data coding and analysis, as well as any quality, credibility or ethical issues that may be involved. Support your findings with relevant existing research.

Submit your response as a Microsoft Word document by Thursday, December 3, 2015 All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.
