Analyzes the criminal behavior of domestic violence and describes how criminal behavior is evaluated towards the formation of new policy for social order in the criminal justice system.

You are a rookie law enforcement officer in training. You are assigned to work with a seasoned patrol officer named Roberto, who has been on the job for 15 years. You and Roberto are working the 11:00pm to 7:00am and the local bars have just closed at 2:00am. At approximately 2:20am, a neighbor called to report a potential domestic dispute located at an address Roberto is aware of because neighbors have called in two other domestic disputes in the last two months. Loud voices can be heard as you arrive on scene. You and Roberto approach the residence with caution. You knock on the door, identify yourselves as a law enforcement officers, and the music is turned off from inside the residence. A woman answers the door bent over and bleeding from the mouth as a car starts in the driveway and speeds off. Roberto reacts quickly by running back to the police cruiser, leaves the scene, and stops the vehicle a short distance from the residence.

You record information Sarah provides about the domestic dispute between her and her boyfriend. Roberto interviews Sarah’s boyfriend who drove away in the vehicle, but his story varies from Sarah’s considerably. Sarah reluctantly tells you that she is afraid that a filing a report will only cause more trouble for her. Sarah refuses to file the report, refuses medical treatment, and asks to be left alone. Roberto returns to the residence, offers Sarah contact information of an anonymous domestic violence hotline, and gives her his contact information if she decides she wants to file charges. Two days later the officers are called to the home again, but this time Sarah has a broken arm. Sarah chooses to file charges against her boyfriend this time; he is arrested and taken to jail.

Here’s What You Need To Do . . .

Describe how waste can be used to generate energy from burning municipal solid waste and discuss the current ways of pollution control for landfills.

Write your answers to the following question in Short Essay Format: Question 1A. Question 1B should be done in a Table Format. Be sure to include reasons and facts as required to support your answers. Cite examples. Each student is responsible for submitting their own response to the following questions.

Number your answers for each question.

(45 points total) One way to manage today’s excessive municipal solid waste (MSW) output is to incinerate it. Waste incineration has two benefits: one is that landfills won’t fill and close as quickly, and the other is that burning the waste can produce energy. It is estimated that up to 90% (by volume) of waste can be kept out of landfills by incinerating it. Waste incinerators have been around for a long time, but were phased out in the 1970s due to pollution concerns and other negative effects on the environment. Today’s waste-to-energy facilities are making a comeback and it is due in large part to technological improvements that reduce the amount of pollution.

(25 points) Describe how waste can be used to generate energy from burning municipal solid waste and discuss the current ways of pollution control for landfills. Can the ash left behind from the burning operations be used, or should it be disposed of in a landfill?

2. (20 points) Table Format. Suppose an incineration facility costs your city $42.5 million to build. The facility would be capable of burning 675 tons of waste per day producing 15 megawatts of electricity, which can be sold for $0.088 per kilowatt. It will cost nothing additional to take the waste to the facility, as opposed to paying $100 a ton fee to have it buried in a landfill. How long will it take for the waste-burning facility to pay for itself? Ignore operating costs. Assume the facility operates 24/7, 365 days a yea

Given the data presented, what criteria would you use to evaluate the make versus buy decision that faces you?

Put together a PowerPoint presentation with 12–15 slides that can be used for both internal purposes and when you meet with all of your vendors to kick off a vendor certification program. To earn full credit on the PowerPoint, you must use colored slides, clip art or charts, or photos on each slide to make them eye-appealing, along with 150–200 words of speaker notes for each slide, explaining the slide’s content. Slides must not be covered with commentary; that is what the speaker notes are for.
Assume the following information about a company:
  • The company is currently assessing a make versus buy decision.
  • The company currently makes product line “A” using proprietary technology. Its variable cost/unit is $10, and its fixed cost allocation of overhead based on producing 10,000/yr is $20/unit, for a total standard cost of $30/unit.
  • The company also makes 3 other completely different and separate product lines on different equipment.
  • The company has a quote from an outside vendor for this product A, for $18/unit.

Assignment:

  • Given the data presented, what criteria would you use to evaluate the make versus buy decision that faces you?
  • As a company’s managers create the optimum supply chain, there are many criteria that must be weighed, and in some cases, trade-offs are made. List at least 5 trade-off type decisions that the firm’s managers would have to make to establish the optimum supply chain. Include why it is a trade-off and the added information that you would need to actually make the best choice.

The following is an example of a trade-off:

  • Should the manufacturing plant be located closer to its raw material vendors or its customer base? Why?
  • Make up a checklist that a company’s vendor certification team should fill out when it visits a vendor prior to certifying them. What are the pros and cons of installing a vendor certification program

Do you believe Walmart’s employment strategy will produce positive results?

Walmart is the largest retailer in the US (and other parts of the world) employing 1.2 million in the USA. In February 2015 Doug McMillon announced a series of employment changes, among other things raising minimum starting pay to $9/hr. with plans to further increase it to $10.hr. within one year.

He also announced increases in employee benefits (e.g. healthcare, 401k plan, educational support, etc.) and career development and promotion opportunities, etc.

Of course, these changes increased their costs substantially, and information on these (and future) cost increases was included in the announcements (or could be estimated by external analysts). Since January, Walmart’s stock price has declined substantially (approximately 30% by mid-September. When WMT announced their quarterly results, documenting their increased costs, the stock price fell more than 13% in just a few days! Note that these declines in the market value of Walmart’s stock are predominantly (if not completely) due to its Human Resource practices!

1)   How (Price, Quantity, Customization, Availability) does Walmart compete?

2)   Who are Walmart’s competition, and what changes have occurred in the past several years?

3)   Why did Mr. McMillon (His HR head, the Board, etc.) make such broad changes in Walmart’s employment practices?

4)   Why was the Stock Market’s reaction so negative?

5)   Do you believe Walmart’s employment strategy will produce positive results?

6)   When do you estimate those results will be recognized by investors?

Explain the degree to which John Lewis’s style reflected this leadership theory.

Leadership is one of the most observed and least understood phenomena on earth.”

—James MacGregor Burns, political historian, in Leadership (1978)

Throughout history, scholars have developed theories to explain the traits, behaviors, and goals of effective and ethical leadership. A leader’s personality and the leadership theory he or she follows influence his or her leadership style. Leadership style refers to the traits, skills, and behaviors a leader exhibits in situations. John Lewis, a civil rights activist, was a leader in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and regularly demonstrated ethical and caring behavior as well as a desire to help others. For this Application, you evaluate the degree to which John Lewis’s style reflected a particular leadership theory.

Review “Eras of Mainstream Leadership Theory and Research.” Consider the similarities and differences among the great man, trait, contingency, transformational, servant, and multifaceted leadership theories. Also, think about how to choose which leadership style to use.

Review the article “Ethical Leadership: A Review and Future Directions.” Consider the similarities and differences among transformational, spiritual, authentic, and ethical leadership theories.

Review the video Minds That Matter: John Lewis.

Think about John Lewis’s leadership style and consider what leadership theory best describes this style.

The assignment (2 pages): Due by Sunday 11/01/15.

Briefly describe the leadership theory that you think best describes John Lewis’s leadership style.

Explain the degree to which John Lewis’s style reflected this leadership theory. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your explanation.
