Managerial Decision Making Research and Analysis

Research a specific company of your choice and identify some of the managerial decisions that were made over time and in response to changes in its market or competitive environment. Use the Ashford University Library and web-based sources for your research. At least three external scholarly sources must be used in addition to the textbook.

Address all of the following areas:

Describe the company and provide a brief history of its operations. Find or use graphs to illustrate its financial performance over the years.
Describe any sources of risk or uncertainty in its operations. Do the financial reports indicate risky or uncertain activities or changes to the economic environment that ultimately appear to have affected the company’s financial outcomes? Be specific.
Are there any government regulations that have affected this company’s operations domestically or abroad? Explain.
Describe the inputs that are used in this company’s production function and identify any challenges to securing these inputs.
Determine if the company has introduced new products in existing markets or created new markets over time. What is the impact on its finances?
Determine if the price of its products increased or declined over time and analyze the reasons for price fluctuations. Study the demand elasticity for its products and discuss the availability of close substitutes for its products. How does that affect pricing decisions?
Analyze the company’s profitability. Identify the economy or industry influences on its costs, operations, and profitability.
Describe the competitive environment in which the firm operates, the distribution of market power, and the strategic behavior of the firm and its competitors. Apply your knowledge of the theory of this company’s market structure. How does the company make pricing and production decisions? Is your observation supported by the theoretical models? Refer to the financial reports for illustration.

Describe any non-price competitive strategies that the company might be engaging in. Provide specific examples.
Evaluate if the company made any mistakes in its decisions over time, and recommend any changes or improvements for future operations. Refer to the financial reports when making specific observations or recommendations..

Use economic language and demonstrate your understanding of the concepts and theories of this course.

Develop a paper detailing an analysis of market structures and relating pricing strategies that are suitable for each of these structures.

Pricing strategy varies significantly across different market structures. The pricing guidelines in a monopoly market are relatively straightforward. Since the company is the only producer offering the product, it can mark-up the price as far as the customer can bear. The pricing strategies for a producer operating in a perfect competition structure are also fairly intuitive. They are price takers, and hence price is set at the marginal cost of the product. This is due to the fact that there are many firms offering nearly identical products. However, there is optimal pricing for the market structures offering differentiated products with many competitors (oligopoly) or a few producers (monopolistic competition). These are much more complex and involved. It has been stated that differentiation in products that creates differences in customer valuation is the most prevalent type of competition. In such markets pricing strategies may include the three C’s of cost, competition, and customer.

Develop a paper detailing an analysis of market structures and relating pricing strategies that are suitable for each of these structures. Furthermore, include a real world example of pricing strategy for a specific company by identifying its market structure

Provide your view and just enough background detail to allow the reader to understand the problem and objectives.

Refine and pose a reasonably complex problem definition along with a set of objectives (elements that you want to exist in your solution). Do not go beyond the objectives stage.

Remember: Objectives are the desirable traits of a potential solution. They are not alternatives and they are not action steps. This can be tricky, so think carefully and evaluate your list!

Provide your view and just enough background detail to allow the reader to understand the problem and objectives.
The length should be between 550 and 800 words (excluding the title page and references). Assignments under 550 and over 800 words will attract penalties.

Copied input, quotations, and paraphrasing require citations and references conforming to APA 6th edition standards to avoid the dire consequences of plagiarism and cheating. Formal research is not required

Discuss how topology relates to the selection of your code and the Hamming metric.

Create a correctable code for a list of key words.  Your task is to create an efficient, correctable code for a list that contains 20 key words.  The words in your code will be represented as binary strings using only 0’s and 1’s.  Stringent correctability requirements mean your code must have a minimum distance of 3.

The following are the list of task that needs to be completed in order to answer above problem.

– Create a code consisting of binary codewords.

– The code must meet three requirements

— Contain at least 20 codewords

— Have a minimum distance of 3 (explain why a min distance of 4 is no better than 3)

— Maintain efficiency by using the fewest number of bits per codeword as possible

– Clearly document and describe your code: what it is, why you chose it, etc.

– Discuss how topology relates to the selection of your code and the Hamming metric

1) Consider the following game between players One and Two. First, One decides whether to wear a swimsuit or regular clothes, and Two observes this. Next, the players simultaneously decide whether to go the Beach or to the Opera. If One is wearing regular clothes, the payoffs are as in the standard Battle of the Sexes game where One has a preference for the beach and Two has a preference for the opera (i.e., One’s payoff is 2 if they both go to the beach, 1 if they both go to the Opera, and 0 if they go to different places, etc.). If One is wearing a swimsuit, the payoffs are the same as above except that One’s payoff is -1from going to the Opera. (a) Draw the extensive form of this game. (b) Find the pure strategy Subgame Perfect Nash Equilibria. Describe explicitly the equilibrium strategies. (c) Briefly explain why there is no Subgame Perfect Nash Equilibrium outcome where both players go to the opera. (d) Find a Nash Equilibrium in which both players go to the opera.

2) Consider a game in which players A and B both have two actions, Left and Right. Suppose the game is played twice. For each case below, (i) draw the corresponding game tree with the appropriate information sets; (ii) give the number of strategies each player has; (iii) give the number of subgames of the game. (a) A moves first, B observes A’s action, then B moves. A then observes B’s action, and the game is repeated in a similar fashion. In what follows, assume that players simultaneously decide between Left and Right, and this simultaneous game is played twice. (b) Once the game has been played for the first time, players’ actions are publicly revealed. Players then play again. (c) Once the game has been played for the first time, player B learns the action A has taken. Player A learns nothing. Players then play again. (d) Once the game has been played for the first time, player A learns the action B has taken. Not only does player B not learn anything, but he forgets what action he chose. Players then play again.

Two firms play the following game. Firm 1 chooses a quantity q1, and this is observed by Firm 2, who in turn chooses his quantity q2. The inverse demand function is P(q1 + q2) = 5 – (q1 + q2) and both firms’ marginal cost is 1. Firms’ profit at the end of the game is their revenue minus their cost. (a) Find the quantities produced in a Subgame Perfect Nash Equilibrium and each firm’s profit. (b) How much would Firm 2 be willing to pay to change the order of play and become the first one to move?

1. Consider the following extensive form game (attached): (a) Give the normal form representation of this game. (b) Find all pure strategy Nash equilibria. (c) Using Backward Induction, find the Subgame Perfect Nash Equilibrium of this gam

Choose a design for your research project that you feel will best answer the remaining research questions that are unanswered by the secondary research.

You have been hired by Acme Wholesaling, Inc. to provide research to determine the likely success of a new product that it plans to market. Acme Wholesaling, Inc. wholesales various garments and accessories through street vendors in New York City. These items include umbrellas (for when it rains) and hats, gloves, and scarves (for when it is cold). The street vendors are small-time retailers that resell these items to the public. Many of these vendors establish their carts in Central Park and other park grounds in Manhattan.

An employee of Acme Wholesaling, Inc. has come up with an idea involving the sale of picnic blankets through these vendors for when the weather is nice and people want to sit out in the park. Acme Wholesaling, Inc. has a manufacturer lined up who will make these blankets in wool and cotton blend in various sizes, depending upon the order from Acme Wholesaling, Inc. The company would then resell these to the vendors. Although the ultimate consumer of these blankets is the individuals in the park, Acme Wholesaling, Inc. does not deal with them directly. They work solely through the street vendors.

Your job is to provide enough validation for the idea that Acme Wholesaling, Inc. can convince the street vendors to carry this new product on their carts.

Throughout this course, you will be working on various aspects of a research plan for the scenario company: Acme Wholesaling, Inc. This is the Key Assignment that you will be contributing to every week. The final assignment will be submitted in the form of a PowerPoint presentation at the end of the course. The following sections will be part of the final key assignment:

Primary Research: Week 3
Research Design: Week 3
Sampling Method: Week 3

In this assignment, you will develop a sample for your marketing research study for Acme Wholesaling, Inc. Review the details of the scenario company again, and complete following:

Specify the target market population that Acme Wholesaling, Inc. should be aiming at, using demographic and psychographic variables to define who is in this market. Justify why this is the proper target population for Acme Wholesaling, Inc.
From that target population, decide and describe the sampling method and the size of the sample you would recruit to participate in your research study.
Choose a design for your research project that you feel will best answer the remaining research questions that are unanswered by the secondary research. Why would this design be best? The actual questions or discussion guide is not necessary at this point.
Include a time line of activities and a duration for data collection.
How long will it take to gather the required data?
How long will each participant be required to devote to fully participate in your project?
Will you compensate participants for their time? Why?
