The first draft of the brief literature review is due. This literature review should be from a comprehensive literature search and cover major themes you have identified in the literature. You should ensure that you are identifying and giving consideration to the theoretical or conceptual frameworks present in the literature you are reviewing (see Bloomberg & Volpe, 2008; Ridley, 2012). In this paper, you also need to focus on synthesizing and aggregating the literature, as well as providing a critical analysis of the literature from at least 15 scholarly sources (see readings from this week and Ridley, Chapter 8—regarding analysis and synthesis). Integrate or combine your resources to determine what conclusions can be drawn from the articles as a group, whereby the focus is on content (conclusions, hypotheses, or premises), rather than the individual authors or articles. Topics in need of additional research may also be discovered while aggregating your resources. Finally, ensure your draft adheres with the publication requirements of the APA Publication Manual (6th ed.) and that your draft is free of typographical and grammatical errors. This is a kind reminder that you should continually proofread your work.

Length: 10-12 pages minimum (this page length requirement does not include the reference list)

Note: You will be required to submit a second draft of the brief literature review that you have expanded. Therefore, you will need to include additional peer-reviewed sources in Week 11 of this course as part of the Signature Assignment.

Depending on whether you are seeking a DBA or a PhD, it is of paramount importance that you identify an overall organizing structure in the literature using either a conceptual framework (DBA students) or theoretical framework (PhD students). As previously mentioned, it is important to be able to relate the issues discussed within the review to theory or other frameworks that already exist in the field. This will allow you to show how your study will contribute to practice and/or theory. For this assignment, you will identify how your literature review fits within a conceptual framework(s) or theoretical framework(s) within your specialization.

As you have been collecting and reading your scholarly sources thus far, you should have been noting the conceptual or theoretical frameworks used by the authors. This was part of digesting the information within a scholarly source that you worked on in Weeks 2 and 3. In addition, you have been working to form themes in developing your outline in Week 4 and noting what frameworks were used within each theme/(sub)topic. In Weeks 5 and 6, you summarized, critically analyzed, and synthesized the literature you collected thus far. All the while, you also continued to collect additional scholarly sources, write, receive feedback on your writing, incorporate that feedback, and continue on. In other words, you have been partaking in the iterative process of writing a literature review. This assignment is geared toward further honing your literature review by helping you determine the conceptual or theoretical framework that you will use to couch your paper.

Look back at the scholarly resources you have read thus far. Describe the conceptual and/or theoretical frameworks used by the authors.
Compare and contrast how your topic relates to each of those frameworks used.
Based on your analysis, which framework best applies to your topic? Note that you may find that none of the frameworks seem to really fit your topic. This is a normal part of the writing process. If you find this is the case, please explain how the frameworks in your sources do not fit your topic. This should help illuminate where you should search in the literature to find a framework that applies to your study, which you can then discuss here.
Justify why this conceptual/theoretical framework applies to your topic area and literature search. Also ensure your chosen framework reflects your degree type.

Comparative Essay: Eastern vs. Western Landscapes The Eastern landscape tradition is markedly different from that of the West. Eastern artists intended to evoke meditative contemplation through visual imagery using atmospheric perspective, placement, and asymmetry. Eastern works also stress a reverence for nature and often include calligraphy or even poems as part of the primary subject. What ideas do Western landscapes convey? For this assignment, we will choose one example each of paintings that represent the Eastern and Western landscape tradition. In our essay, we will compare and contrast each work’s individual similarities and differences and identify major contrasts in these two cultural approaches. For basic information on how to approach this comparative essay, visit the Module 5 Writing Skills page. Step 1: Research First, conduct basic research on Eastern and Western landscape paintings and create a list that includes least three major ways in which they differ. Then, using the ART 110 Research Guide sources or comparable sites, browse examples of both Eastern and Western landscape art and choose two examples that will allow you to write a fully-developed essay based on your three or more major points of comparison. Next, summarize the primary differences you will write about in one “thesis statement” that will appear as a sentence in your essay’s introduction. Note that not all Eastern and Western landscapes will make strong enough statements to support your thesis statement. For example, if Eastern landscapes stress a reverence for nature, look for Western examples that either clearly do or do not represent the same idea. Your choices should provide you with at least three clear, strong points of comparison. Step 2: Writing Essay (800 – 1200 Words) A. First, review the information regarding “comparative essays” in the Module 5 Writing and decide which strategy you will follow to write your essay. Insert an image file of each of the landscape examples—one by an Eastern artist and one by a Western artist—you have chosen to write about at the beginning of your document file. In your introduction, identify the artists who created the landscapes, the subject of the works, the era in which they were painted, the medium the artist used, and the size of the work. For the next part of your introduction, provide a brief description of how each work represents the ideals of the Eastern and Western landscape traditions or philosophies. As before, this is a “thesis-driven” essay. Include your thesis statement in the introduction and explain the three or more points of comparison you will be using in your analysis of the different attitudes towards nature, landscape, or the environment that you find in these two works. B. Using one of the strategies explained in the Module 5 Writing Skills material (Compare and Contrast Strategies), explain how the two works contrast according to your three points of comparison. Use terminology from the elements of art and principles of design as you examine each work. Consider the following questions as you develop your comparisons: What did this artist hope to accomplish with this work? What aspect of the landscape did the artist most value? Did the artist demonstrate a personal connection with the landscape, or were they conveying a broader cultural message? Does each work represent attitudes towards nature continue on today? Explain each consideration in detail and refer directly to how they are demonstrated in the art itself. C. Conclude by explaining any major differences, similarities, or attitudes towards nature that were revealed by the artists of the works you chose. Do you think the Eastern and Western philosophies concerning nature are vastly different, or are they the same? Explain why. Is this still true in the modern era?
