Discuss the areas that such training should cover.

dAfter spending some time observing the day-to-day operations of Elora Jean & Co., you have noticed a trend in employee and labor relations issues. These issues include perceived unfair treatment from managers, distress over disciplinary actions, and anxiety about new human resources (HR) policies.

Aware of the union and nonunion entities within Elora Jean & Co., you have observed that the production supervisors are unclear on the facility’s union grievance procedures, and the nonproduction supervisors are unclear on how to handle employee concerns in their offices. Employees often feel that they do not have the means to fully voice their concerns. With this level of confusion on grievance procedures, employee morale and performance has begun to decline, affecting Elora Jean & Co.’s ability to stay competitive.

As the HR consultant, you see an opportunity to educate Elora Jean & Co.’s management team on grievance practices. You decide to review guidelines on dispute resolution and grievance procedures and prepare a presentation for the company’s owner.

Prepare a presentation on developing a work climate in which grievances are a last resort and how to properly address them when they do occur. Your presentation should include the following components:

Include recommendations on a strategy that Elora Jean & Co. can incorporate to proactively avoid grievances. Your recommendation should include a way to create an environment in which employee issues are identified and addressed before they move into a formal grievance process. Recommendations for creating positive employee relations should be discussed.
Include recommendations for a dispute resolution process for the nonunion offices. Your proposal should include a sample procedure for nonunion employees to follow when complaints arise.
Present step-by-step guidelines for handling grievances in the production facility. Your presentation should include recommendations for investigating complaints, working effectively with union representatives, and summarizing supervisor responsibilities. Include cautions about actions to avoid when handling grievances.
Include a proposal for training to educate the line managers on handling grievances and avoiding grievances to ensure violations do not occur. Specifically, discuss the areas that such training should cover.

Design a basic experiment to assess a cause and effect relationship based on your research question.

Discuss 3-5 things in this book that could help you think about how to implement that change.

We used to think, and this was supported by research, that the brain became a static organ as people entered adulthood. We now know this is no longer true (as will you when you read The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science). The one thing in life we can be certain of is that there will always be change (someone else said this but I can’t find the quote). If this is true, an important quality in all of us is our ability to tolerate and embrace change, or our plasticity. Consider some area in your life that you would like to change,  Then discuss 3-5 things in this book that could help you think about how to implement that change.

Response papers should be 4 – 5 pages double-spaced (MLA or APA format, size 12, double spaced, Times New Roman, left heading). The response papers will involve some degree of personal examination using the material from the class. It should not be a diary entry and it should not be a book report – introduction, thesis statement, support (with references), and conclusion.

Prepare a report that highlights opportunities and incentives for future business in that city.

According to the Michigan Future Business Index, Michigan business owners are optimistic about Michigan’s future business climate and their perceptions have improved over the past six months in several categories. (Downloadable report here: http://www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/thank-you/mfbi-reports-download?submissionGuid=2d7cfc51-c49e-4f36-b6be-392ba1f18030) Yet there have also been national reports that portray Michigan business climate in a less favorable light.

For this paper, select a Michigan city (or neighborhood within a large city) that you believe has potential for future business growth. Then investigate the city business environment and prepare a report that highlights opportunities and incentives for future business in that city. Some categories you might consider are listed below.

The final paper should be 5 to 10 pages (not counting title page or references) in APA format.

Possible Considerations for Future Business Growth

Infrastructure –

· Transportation networks – transit, product distribution, supply acquisition

· Financial networks – investors (local? U.S.? Global?)

· City maintenance, cost of city services

· Communication

Business Environment –

· Types of businesses (Finance, manufacturing, service, cultural); Mix of business

· Any specific industry that might be entrenched there

· Are new businesses/industries considering location there

· Information Technology support services

· Politics

· Business tax environment

Labor Markets –

· Are labor resources readily available? If so, what are the skill sets?

· Education and training – are networks in place?

Social Environment – Can consider this from both labor resources and customer viewpoints.
