Write a 10-page research paper on a topic of your choice that explores a facet of the relationship between line and color in a given corpus of work, and/or pastel painting in the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries. The chief aim of this paper is to give you an opportunity to delve more deeply into the material of the course, but you are welcome to propose topics related to the scope of the class. For example, you could choose to investigate a series by John Russell, an eighteenth-century British pastellist. Your subject, however, should be more focused than a given artist’s pastel oeuvre. You must develop an original argument or thesis that can be further investigated and ultimately supported by conducting research. There are many different directions a research paper might take: for example, you might investigate the reception or patronage of a specific work or series, or pose a question about an artist’s working methods during a certain moment, or relate your argument to the socio-political context of the time.
