Hormone Replacement Therapy

In recent years, hormone replacement therapy has become a controversial issue. When prescribing therapies, advanced practice nurses must weigh the strengths and limitations of the prescribed supplemental hormones. If advanced practice nurses determine that the limitations outweigh the strengths, then they might suggest alternative treatment options such as herbs or other natural remedies, changes in diet, and increase in exercise.

Consider the following scenario:

As an advanced practice nurse at a community health clinic, you often treat female (and sometimes male patients) with hormone deficiencies. One of your patients requests that you prescribe supplemental hormones. This poses the questions: How will you determine what kind of treatment to suggest? What patient factors should you consider? Are supplemental hormones the best option for the patient, or would they benefit from alternative treatments?

To prepare:

Review Chapter 56 of the Arcangelo and Peterson text, as well as the Holloway and Makinen and Huhtaniemi articles in the Learning Resources.
Review the provided scenario and reflect on whether or not you would support hormone replacement therapy.
Locate and review additional articles about research on hormone replacement therapy for women and/or men. Consider the strengths and limitations of hormone replacement therapy.
Based on your research of the strengths and limitations, again reflect on whether or not you would support hormone replacement therapy.
Consider whether you would prescribe supplemental hormones or recommend alternative treatments to patients with hormone deficiencies.

Note: Next week, you will be will be studying the dynamics of group decision making. To prepare for the Week 8 assignments, you will complete this week’s assignment in groups. Your Instructor will assign you to one of six groups to complete this Assignment and the Discussion that follows. Remember, students taking this course come from different cultures around the world. Psychological research shows the way people make decisions is often not rational. To prepare for this Assignment, read about the Allais Paradox and the Ellsberg Paradox in the Hastie and Dawes text. Also read Daniel Kahneman’s Nobel Prize lecture, “Maps of Bounded Rationality: A Perspective on Intuitive Judgment and Choice.”

For this Assignment, your Instructor will assign the following:

Each student to one of six groups
To each group, one of the following chapters from the Hastie and Dawes text: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9
To each group, one of the videos listed under Media in this week’s resources.

Chapters 4 through 9 of the Hastie and Dawes text present a variety of ways in which people may succumb to inherent decision-making biases. For this Assignment, each student will read one of these chapters and work collaboratively with his or her group to write a 3- to 5-page group paper that explains the content of the assigned chapter and its connection to the decision problems from Week 1. In your Discussion this week, you will post your paper for your colleagues to read and discuss.

With your group, identify decision problems from the Week 1 Assignment that fall within the purview of the challenges or biases associated with rational decision making as discussed in your group’s assigned chapter and video.

With your group, collaboratively write a 3- to 5-page paper that explains your experiences with the Week 1 decision problems and how inherent decision-making biases may have influenced rational thought. The right of a parent to decide how to raise their children is considered a fundamental right, which means that government interference with that right must be for a compelling reason such as child abuse or neglect. In the case of Native American children, children were often removed from their tribal homes and placed in child welfare systems throughout the nation that were not culturally similar. In response to this, the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) was passed in 1978.

As the CPS investigator you have learned that Anne may possibly have Native American ancestry. This is your first case regarding a child from a Native American ancestry, so you will need to research the provisions of ICWA to ensure you are well informed. You are asked by your supervisor to write a 2-3 page paper outlining your knowledge of the following:

Women’s Roles Then & Now. Script. Script a conversation between two (2) notable women from the 18th and / or 19th century on the roles women should play in society. Within the dialogue, include:

What opinions each of the women might have on the role the women should play in society during their lifetimes.

Application: Fundamental Rights

In the United States, there are exceptional rights called fundamental rights under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. The Supreme Court has held through due process and equal protection that to restrict those fundamental rights, the government must have a “compelling governmental interest.” Some fundamental rights, like the right to free speech, are listed in the Bill of Rights, but others are not expressly written in the Constitution. Rather, they have been interpreted through constitutional construction, which you learned about in Week 1. Those rights include the right to privacy, marriage, procreation, and interstate travel. A law restricting these rights must be narrowly tailored and will be evaluated by the Supreme Court with strict scrutiny. It is an issue of substantive due process if the law denies a fundamental right without adequate justification.

Review Chapter 1, 1.15 and 1.16, of your course text, Constitutional Law, and the article, “Due Process.” Reflect on the purpose of the Due Process Clause.
