Choose one (1) of the three (3) reading selections from the list of topic choices below. The focus is on brief but important primary source material written by major authors. Read the selections as identified with each topic below. Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (250 words minimum) which analyzes the “surprise ending” of the reading selection.

Topic Choices:

Reading selection from Descartes’ Discourse on the Method (Part IV). Descartes begins with a proof of one basic conclusion and ends with a proof of something much grander. Remember to focus on the surprise and point of realization, not the details of the philosophical argument. Read Part IV of the Discourse on the Method located at http://www.earlymoderntexts.com/assets/pdfs/descartes1637.pdf (then scroll down to Part 4, pp. 14-18). This is only four or five (4 or 5) pages of the larger work.

Reading selection of Swift’s A Modest Proposal. It is essential to recognize the genre of this work, as discussed in our class text, which you should consult and cite. Swift promotes a radical solution, but subtle options are mentioned. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. Read and focus on A Modest Proposal located at http://www.victorianweb.org/previctorian/swift/modest.html.

Two (2) reading selections from Voltaire’s Candide. Consider how these readings start and end in terms of the action and the beliefs. You are looking for surprise and a point of realization. These selections can be found on pp. 840-841 in the textbook. In addition, consult the class text at pp. 824-825.

For the reading selection you choose:

Clearly state in your own words the “surprise ending” in the reading you selected. Clearly identify the point in the reading when you realized that there were elements in the reading that surprised you. Not all of the surprises come at the end.
Evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was different from what you expected.

This chapter addresses the concepts of “programmed” and “non-programmed” decisions. The authors also review the rational or classical approach to decision making, as well as the administrative model, which seeks to explain why decisions are often flawed. This chapter also introduces the possibilities and the problems inherent in group decision processes, and describes the role of creativity and learning in decision making and entrepreneurship.

Focus on the definitions and concepts provided throughout this chapter. After reading this chapter, ask yourself how decisions have been made in your current or former workplace. What kinds of decisions were programmed? Where was the guidance to make programmed decisions? Was there a rational process used to make non-programmed decisions? Were any group processes used to gather information and perspectives, or generate ideas? Concerning the rational or Classical Approach to decision making; how are each of the steps in the decision-making process critical to choosing the right course of action? What efforts have you seen, in your present or past workplaces, to increase organizational learning or encourage creativity? Chapter 6, “Planning, Strategy, and Competitive Advantage” (pp.184–221)

This chapter addresses the concept of a “competitive advantage” and how, through planning and strategic decisions, a competitive advantage can be obtained. The authors explain planning levels, types, and time frames, along with their correlation to levels of management and perspectives of the company’s operations and environment. The concept of “strategy” is discussed at length, along with various approaches to formulating a strategy with examples provided to help the reader understand the complexity and variety of strategic planning.

Focus on the definitions and concepts provided throughout this chapter. Consider the differences between adopting a domestic strategy and a global strategy, as well as a low-cost strategy and a differentiation strategy. Ask yourself, what companies that you know of have a competitive advantage in some area over their competitors? How do they use their competitive advantage to secure, build, or expand their business? Can you identify a clear strategy they have implemented to take advantage of their competitive advantage? Would you select the same strategy, or would you implement a different strategy? Does your employer have a competitive advantage? Does your employer appear to have a business strategy? Why or why not?

For this writing, let’s start with the issue of the evaluation of students in First-Year Writing (FYW) courses. What if we were to make the claim that all FYW should be “Pass/No Entry,” that is, while individual work would be graded, the overall course grade would would be based on meeting a certain overall level of proficiency (perhaps 73%). Those meeting or surpassing that criterion would receive the grade of Satisfactory (S) and be allowed to register for the next class in the sequence (or in the case of 102 would then have completed the FYW sequence); those not meeting that criterion would be required to retake the class, and no entry would be made to their transcript.

– What reasons would there be in support of the institution of this grading policy? List them, and for each reason try to give a sense of what evidence would support it.

– What objections would be raised by an opposition, those against the institution of Pass/No Entry? List them, and for each objection try to give a sense of how it can be answered.
