Seminar Review Paper Introduction

The objective of this assignment is for students to witness a briefing by a technical speaker so they may have exposure to briefings other than given by their instructors. From the catalogue: Lecture series presenters will present material that is not part of the required course load to expand the horizons of the students. Each student will write a short paper on each of these presentations.

Individual Seminar Paper Review

write a short (3 to 4 pages, typed, 1 0.5 spaced) review of the briefing. The seminar review should follow the following outline:

Abstract: What was presented in the briefing. (video)
Point of View of Presenter: What view is the briefer espousing? (khan)
Justification. Why did you select this briefing, what is unique about it? (research about systems integration)
Briefers Style: What did the briefer do to keep your interest? What did she do that was not good briefing style?
Critique: Your opinion on the seminar.

Type your name and date somewhere along the top of the first page.
Put the title of your paper centered at the top of the first page.
Submit a hard copy in class and upload a copy to Canvas.

Instructions:

Choose a topic for your paper and an argument you will make. It should relate to the artist you researched for the Artist Profile assignment and your Listening Guide. Keep your argument simple.
Examples:

Beethovens Third Symphony shows how the composer used new techniques and instruments to expand the dynamics of Romantic music.
The Barber of Seville and Rossinis music were exposed to new audiences in the twentieth century because of Bugs Bunny.
Waylon Jennings wrote Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way? to express his dissatisfaction about the development of country music.
Neil Pearts complex rhythms are a defining musical element of Rushs music.
Expand upon the research you did for your Artist Profile to support your argument.
Keep track of and cite your sources. You must cite at least two different sources in this assignment. Oxford Music Online (Links to an external site.) is a great starting place. You may want to use published interviews, biographies, liner notes, and music encyclopedias. Take advantage of the library.
Use selections from your Listening Guide/Artist Profile as needed. It will be helpful to plug them into an outline as you research and write. You will want to edit and refine them to fit the tone and argument of your paper.
Write an 850-1200 word research paper. This is a brief essay, so keep it focused while supporting your argument. Remember to proofread, use the Writing About Music guidePreview the documentView in a new window, and cite your sources.

Suggested structure for your essay:

Begin the paper with an introductory paragraph that includes your argument.
Provide a brief biographical sketch of the artist and relate it to your argument.
Describe and analyze the piece that you selected in support of your argument. Feel free to describe its musical elements (form, melody, rhythm, instrumentation, etc.) and lyrical content.
Support your argument with additional information and research.
