State the significance of the proposed research to a field or fields in the natural sciences and engineering (NSE) or Health Research.
Note: Proposals that include the use of methodologies, tools, techniques and knowledge from the NSE are not automatically considered eligible for NSERC support. The proposed research must clearly be intended to advance knowledge in the NSE.

 NSERC expects applicants to write their own research project independently, and that ideas and/or text belonging to others are properly referenced.  Include all relevant information in the outline. Do not refer members to URLs or other publications for supplemental information.

Studentship assignment rubrics    Background and rationale (4 marks)  4.  The student has provided excellent background information in a concise but complete and wellwritten manner.  The rationale was clear and guided the reader to the hypothesis.    3.  The student provided a clear rationale and background but the argument for proceeding with the  project may not be clear from reading the proposal once.  The connection to the hypothesis may not be  obvious.  2.  The student did not provide enough background to understand the rationale for the proposed  experiments.  1.  The background is not adequate to understand the proposal.       Hypothesis and Objectives (4 marks)  4.  The hypothesis is clearly stated and it is well‐supported with the background information provided.   The objective(s) is/are clear and connected to the hypothesis (test(s) the hypothesis).      3.  The hypothesis and objectives are stated but they may not be connected in an obvious way.  2.  A hypothesis or objective (possibly inferred) is not clearly stated so they aren’t connected.  1.  There is no hypothesis or objective (stated or inferred).      Outline experimental approach (4 marks)  4.  The student has proposed an experimental approach that meets the stated objectives with  appropriate detail provided and they will likely achieve the stated objectives and test the hypothesis.  3.  The student has proposed a good series of experiments that are well conceived with appropriate  detail but they may not achieve the objectives or directly test the hypothesis (may be an indirect test).  2.  The student has proposed experiments that are peripherally related to the hypothesis and aims.  1.  The proposed experimental approached is not related to the hypothesis.    Context (4 marks)  4.  The student has provided a compelling argument for funding from either CIHR or NSERC.  3.  The student has made a statement indicating the importance of the work, the connection to the  funding agency is implied.  2.  The proposal is suitable for funding through either CIHR or NSERC but the student has not made a  good case for funding and has not stressed the benefit of the work.  1.  The proposed experimental approached is not suitable for either agency.      Overall  4.  The student has written an excellent proposal that is neither too dense nor short of information.  3.  The student has written a very good proposal that is either somewhat too dense with extraneous  information (not focussed) or lacks some detail so the proposal could be improved with minor revisions.    2.  The student has written a proposal that is difficult to follow and would require major revision to be
