Using appropriate language that will achieve the intent of communicating with employees as well as other internal and external stakeholders is an important part of a leader’s or manager’s effectiveness. Knowing what to say, and how to state it in an appropriate manner, can make the difference between communication that succeeds or fails.

Read the following blog posting and provide feedback on its level of effectiveness. Consider that you have to send this message yourself. How would you write it if you had to follow the “language of leaders?”

It has come to my attention that many of you are lying on your time cards. If you come in late, you should not put 8:00AM on your card. If you take a long lunch, you are not supposed to hide that and sign like the lunch took only one hour. I will not stand for this type of cheating. I simply have no other choice but to institute an employee monitoring. Beginning next week, a video system will be installed in the building with cameras monitoring all entrances, and entry and exit times will be logged every time you use electronic key cards to enter or leave the premises.

Anyone arriving late for work or returning late from lunch more than three times will have to answer directly to me. I don’t care if you had to take a nap or if your family had to go shopping. This is a place of business, and we do not need to be taken advantage of by slackers who are cheaters to boot.

It is too bad that a few bad apples always have to spoil things for everyone.

Assessing and improving employee motivation are essential for effective leadership. These skills can promote improved job satisfaction and overall productivity for all employees. In order to properly assess motivation and satisfaction, a leader must be able to understand the needs and interpret the emotions of employees from diverse cultural backgrounds. This is referred to as emotional intelligence, which involves a sensitivity to and understanding of human expressions. (Human expressions can include facial expressions, body language, verbal communication, etc.)

Conduct searches in the Kaplan Library for journal articles that address the topics of emotional intelligence (EI) and leadership. Then, go to the internet and conduct a search for “free emotional intelligence test.” After taking the test, answer the following questions:

1. How does EI differ from traditional conceptions of intelligence?

2. After completing the emotional intelligence test, do you think that emotional intelligence can be “learned?” Do you see value in focusing on working to increase your emotional intelligence? Why or why not? (To answer this question, apply the findings from your self-evaluation.)

3. Is there a relationship between EI and leadership, between EI and motivation? How would you define those relationships?

As the director of the internal auditing and fraud investigation departments for a large retail company that buys and sells large volumes of products, you have received an anonymous tip from a confidential employee in one of the high-tech warehouses. The confidential employee noted that there was a major embezzlement taking place in one of the divisions. Members of the internal audit department had completed a routine review of the internal control of that division the previous year, and they found that the control system was properly designed and operating effectively. Only minor recommendations were made, and the next review is due 3 years later.

The confidential employee noted the erratic behavior and lavish lifestyle of the warehouse controller and stated that the controller has been overriding existing controls, which would prevent any audit from being able to detect the embezzlement. The warehouse controller is well-respected and highly trusted by the chief executive officer (CEO) and the chief financial officer (CFO), and their families are involved in the same civic organizations. This week’s study notes and your textbook emphasized the importance of understanding multiculturalism in effective interviewing. We often take for granted our own assumptions, values, and ways of perceiving the world until we encounter people from another culture. Recall a time when you experienced “culture shock” by traveling to another part of the world or by interacting with someone from another culture and were surprised by some of your own assumptions. If you have not interacted with people from different cultures, think about a book or film in which you became aware of your own assumptions and discovered that they were not universal.
