• Copy and paste or import these graphs into the MS Word document you prepared in Part 1 of this assignment.

Select a topic of interest from the list above, and then locate professional (Modern Healthcare, etc) articles that pertain to the topic. Do not use more than 8 articles.
Define a problem in delivery of health care in relation to your topic, i.e. Malpractice Costs Impact Insurance Premiums. Describe this problem in terms of economic factors, using the articles you have selected to support your statements.
What impact does the problem have on the population at large? What impact does the problem present for the delivery of health services?
What is the source of the problem? i.e.: Based in regulation, based on demand issues, based on resources, etc.
If you could have the resources needed to “fix” the problem, how would you go about it? What positive impacts would your proposal yield? What potential negative impacts could your proposal yield?…think beyond the scope of the immediate population or facet of health care that is impacted.
Describe what barriers to the reality of your proposal exist. What is the source of each barrier? Use concepts that have been addressed throughout the course.
List your sources of information on the Reference page. Don’t forget to list the articles you began with, any additional sources you used including your text book, additional books and publications, web sites, personal interviews, etc. All sources of information must be properly cited in the body of the text as well as in the list of references. When in doubt, cite the source of the information.

Final Project Grading:

Final Project (research paper)

The final project is to be presented as a report written in APA form. The project can be supported with presentations, outlines or other supporting documents/web site references that will make it interesting to review. The project will be graded according to the following criteria:

10% grammar
10% APA style format
25% required components of the project complete
40% Content of presentation including use of reference materials, internet sites and an interesting presentation: Creativity is a factor.
15% Correct and adequate list of references

The final paper should be between 4 and 6 pages, double spaced and including the Reference page, according to APA style. Any additional presentation materials that the student chooses to use are in addition to the 4 to 6 pages

The economic policies of Ronald Reagan and the supply side theory on which it was based continue to be among the most controversial developments in the post-World War II era. Advocates of Reaganomics argued that their supply side policies would re-invigorate the free enterprise system and restore the affluence the nation had experienced between 1946 and 1968. Critics charged, however, that Reaganomics was a reckless gamble based more on optimistic assumptions than on proven economic theory. With the perspective that more than two decades has given us, who was correct in this debate? That is, in your judgment should Reaganomics be regarded as a success, as a failure, or as something in between? Why?

Suggestions:

· Perhaps a place to begin is with a careful analysis of the supply side theory upon which Reaganomics was based. The readings by Paul Craig Roberts, Arthur B. Laffer, and Ronald Reagan all made specific assumptions and predictions about how individuals, businesses, and the economy in general would respond to the removal of the disincentives that previous economic policies had created. What were these assumptions and predictions? In hindsight how accurate do they seem to have been?

· Walter Heller, one of the many critics of supply-side economics, made specific predictions about the impact supply-side policy would have on US economic life. In hindsight, how accurate was he?

· Economists Uwe Reinhardt and Martin Feldstein examined retrospectively the impact of Reaganonmics on the U.S. economy and reached starkly different conclusions. In your judgment who makes the more persuasive argument?

· Finally, consider Reaganomics from an empirical standpoint. The statistical package I uploaded to Blackboard should give you some basis for judging the degree to which Reaganomics fulfilled the assumptions and expectations of supply side theory. What does this evidence indicate to you

4. Many countries banned violent video games and they have higher crime rates than we do (post hoc ergo propter hoc).

Because

1. Any sentence that talks about how we have always done something as a way to justify doing it is an appeal to tradition.

2. The claim looks like it comes from an authority, but Dr. Dre is a musician, not a doctor.

3. Any claim that says that everyone knows something as a way to justify doing it is an appeal to common belief.

4. Showing that two things happened (that video games are accepted and crime is up) does not prove that the two things are related or that the first caused the second; this is called post hoc ergo propter hoc, which means after this, so because of this.

Select one of these topics. Using what you know about the topic and additional research you conduct, describe at least four claims that might commonly be made that display some of the errors in reasoning covered in this module’s readings.

1. Should people under 18 be subjected to legal curfews or restricted driving privileges?

2. Should libraries be required to install filtering software or otherwise censor the materials that they provide?

In 1960, a political scientist named Richard Neustadt observed that while the founders intentionally designed American government as a system of separated powers, what they actually created was a system of shared powers. In other words, according to Neustadt, it is not Congress that has most legislative powers, but the president and Congress both share equally in the lawmaking process. Do you agree or disagree with Neustadt? Explain your reasons, citing examples. A strong case can be made either way. Be clear, concise, and intelligent as you explain your answer

Write essays of at least one page each on THREE of the following and include a picture:

1. The Old South. Explain how the South developed as a distinct region between 1820 and 1860. Describe some of the different cultures or social classes in the region. Explain how slavery played a key role in shaping the South.

California Connected. Describe some of the ways California changed after becoming part of the United States. How did developments in transportation and agriculture help shape the modern state we see today? How were events in California related to events in the rest of the country? (You may use Connecting California, Sections V-VII and also the Conclusion.)

Political Crises. Explain some of the key events that led up to the Civil War. What social and political trends do you see behind these events? Do you think the war was the result of poor leadership, or was it due to forces that nobody could control?

Fighting the Civil War. Explain the advantages of the North and the South. Was the South foolish to think they could win? Examine specific events to explain your thinking.

Impact of the Civil War. Describe the extent of suffering, both on and off the battlefield. Describe how the war also changed the country socially and economically.

Reconstruction. How did the lives of African Americans change after the Civil War? In what ways was the South unchanged? Examine key events to show how Reconstruction was both a failure and a success.

7. You as President. You can pick the year you get elected (some time in the 1840s to 1870s). What major issues would you tackle? How would you get support for your ideas? You might mention if there are particular leaders you would like to work with. The key to doing a good job on this essay is to write about actual events and realistic options in the time period you choose.

8. Civil War Era: Illustrated Essay (counts as two essays). Find six pictures from the era covered in Chapters 14, 15, and 16. Discuss six key terms or questions on the handouts that relate to the pictures. Tie it all together in an essay with an introduction and a conclusion.

Part II. Write essays of at least one and a half pages each on TWO of the following major themes. Use examples from various parts of the course to develop your main points. Pictures are helpful but not required on this section. I will give a little extra for people who really get into these essays.

Trade. Why has trade been such a hot topic throughout our history? In what ways has trade helped develop the country? In what ways has it divided Americans?

Diversity. In what ways does the early history of our country reflect a richness of cultures, values and lifestyles? Give examples of how Americans have respected diversity and not respected diversity. How has diversity shaped our nation?

Women. Describe the role of women in various time periods. What major changes do you see? What events or changes in society had the most impact on women?

Politics. Describe how Americans have debated political issues in various time periods. Which era do you think had the liveliest political discourse? How are we similar today?

Values. What values do you see as particularly important in early America? Did these values develop from religion? Were they shaped by economic or social factors? Give examples of how Americans have pursued an idealistic vision in various time periods.

Extra Essay Option: You may do an extra essay for extra credit. The extra essay may be from Part I or Part II. This essay could possibly be worth about 3.5 extra points
