No direct quotations. It is not necessary to directly quote any author. When it is important to do so, simply explain the position which he/she is defending. It is, however, necessary to cite all authors whose ideas you reference. Thus, if you begin a sentence with, e.g., "According to Plato…", you should end that sentence with a citation. Essays that include "direct quotations" will not receive a grade higher than a D.

There are three options for Paper Three:

From module eight – Compare and contrast objective ways of knowing and subjective ways of knowing. Is there really any such thing as objectivity? Or is all knowledge just subjective interpretation? Is any knowledge objective?

From module nine – William James in "The Will to Believe" (in the textbook but not on the reading list) says that one must believe "ahead of the evidence." If you don't trust a new friend until you have definite irrefutable proof of his/her trust you may lose them as a friend. If you wait to marry that special person until you have definite irrefutable proof that he/she is the "right person" you may wait forever.

If you agree with James, give me at least two examples of where you would be compelled to "believing ahead of the evidence" and explain how they fit into the three criteria: 1) the choice is momentous (much hangs on the choice), 2) the choice must be made quickly (time is of the essence and you cannot wait for more or better evidence), 3) the choice is live (you could see yourself making the choice or not making the choice) that we can and must choose beyond or without (not despite) the evidence.

If you disagree with James give me at least two example of choices that fit James' three criteria and then tell me why the decision should be postponed until further evidence is gathered and what that evidence might be.

From module ten – King, in the Letter from Birmingham Jail, makes a distinction between just and unjust laws. Do you agree with King? Justify your answer. If you agree, give an example of an unjust law that is on the books today. Be sure to justify your analysis of this law as unjust.

Writing Tips:

Thesis Revision: State your claim about the two plays and add the points that you plan to use and discuss in your essay, such as the theme. Ok, that being said, time for me to explain my topic better. Basically I am supposed to explain how the <wilderness> and outdoorsmanship has become a sort of product for consumers in the US. Going outdoors has become a popular trend and also a statement to society. In the paper, it is important for you to explain how the wilderness and outdoors man ship has become a successful product that Americans consume. Talk about how in America, as an individualistic (rather than pluralistic) society, Americans find it important to form subgroups and have a sense of "us" and "them". As a result, in the US many cling to belonging to the wild and being labeled as outdoorsy and "granola". This is their sense of identity. Americans often have an innate need to label themselves or self identify with a sub-group. Talk about how they accomplish this. They accomplish this in many ways. They dress a certain way (they wear patagonia, northface, mountain hardwear, chacos, wear caribeaners etc.), go to exotic places (Colorado, national parks, off the map), drive big trucks or sports utility vehicles (jeeps, trucks, fj cruiser) with stickers on the back, and often even advertise their "adventurousness" to the world (goPro’s, facebook, selfie stick, instagram, etc.). So basically we are explaining ways in how rhetorically, our western idea of the wilderness and outdoorsmanship has become a successful product for consumers to cling onto for a sense of identity. Maybe look at McGee’s ideograph and talk about how <wilderness> has become such an enigma in the US throughout history compared to other cultures where it is less of a trend. Talk about how the formation of national parks and the transcendentalist movement has made the <wilderness> out to be this separate entity apart from every day life that we have to go off the beaten path to interact with rather than something that surrounds us every day. Even though we’re surrounded by the wilderness a lot of the times in our every day life, the American idea of the great outdoors is often romanticized and thought of as somewhere out in the middle of nowhere. It has become thought of as this sublime/pristine paradise rather than something we see almost everyday. WRITE ABOUT THIS IN THE MOST LOGICAL ORDER not necessarily in the order that I explained my idea to you. And then tack on a bit of an opinionated section to all this. My opinion overall is that if these trends are working to get people outside more, then great. People need to interact with nature more.
