Your final project will culminate with a high quality research project in which you defend an original thesis on a topic of your choice.
This paper:

should be an in-depth investigation and analysis of a particular problem in the field of philosophy
should make frequent use of the principles that were developed in the course, and
should engage directly with some particular argument that you found in the class materials or in your research.
While your research may uncover various relevant and important empirical facts, this is primarily a normative, argumentative essay, in which you defend some position in philosophy. If you're not clear on the distinction between a normative and empirical claims, please use the discussion board to ask your questions.

STRUCTURE
Your final project should be structured roughly as described below.

Introduction

A description of the topic you are investigating and an explanation of the philosophical and moral problems that are generated from the topic.

A clear and concise thesis statement, of the form “I will argue that xxx because yyy"

Body

Describe the philosophical issue you intend to solve. In your description, go beyond the obvious, and try to embed your description in the larger philosophical literature.

Give a charitable (fair-minded) reconstruction of the argument that you will be criticizing. In a short essay like this, it is best to confine your analysis to a small argument, from within the larger problem. In such a short essay, it would be difficult, for example, to adequately defend the thesis, “I shall argue that functionalism is true.” Instead, focus on some smaller thesis such as, “I shall argue that Dennett's defense of functionalism is incomplete.” In a case like this, the charitable reconstruction would be of Dennett's argument for functionalism.

Introduce any empirical evidence that you've collected, and explain why it is relevant to your topic and how it helps to support your thesis.

Evaluate the argument you will be opposing in terms of the logic and principled support that the author is able to give to it. First, an argumentative essay is much easier to structure if you have some specific argument you can discuss critically. Second, since this is an argumentative essay, this evaluation is the most important part of the essay, will constitute your principal objection, and will be the place that you can introduce your own position and contribution to the debate. Take some time to develop it carefully.

A brief answer to your evaluation/objection, on behalf of the original author (since he/she is not here to answer for him/herself), or on behalf of defenders of that position.

Conclusion

Provide a brief restatement of your initial thesis statement.

Determine exactly what your argument allows you to claim. Don't claim too much (e.g., In conclusion, I've shown that the mind is identical with the body…), but be sure to locate exactly what your arguments have committed you to. But don't underestimate your conclusion, either.

Offer suggestions regarding what other investigations might be useful to continue the conversation particularly if there is empirical research that may be conducted. For example, if you are arguing that artificial intelligence is conceptually possible, you might suggest research projects to determine how scientists or philosophers may proceed, mention research that is currently underway, etc.

GUIDELINES

Your paper should be 1500 to 2500 words (usually 4-7 pages) in length and should cover the directives already given.
You should follow accepted research approaches and citation format (APA or MLA).
Your paper should be well developed and convey your understanding of the readings and concepts.
Your paper should be organized, coherent, and unified.
Your paper should be free of spelling and grammatical errors.
Use an even mix of hardcopy and online sources because there is a definite qualitative difference between the two types.
Be sure to document all contentions and “facts” mentioned in an academically acceptable manner. (See writing resources below)
Encyclopedias—especially Wikipedia—and dictionaries are unacceptable sources.

This paper is to have an introduction, body and conclusion.
paper will be one where you compare TWO significant cases related to criminal
procedures. These cases will come from your research of constitutional issues noted
below.
You will use the case brief guidelines to help compare the two cases which will
have similar legal issues. The Constitution and the 4, 5, 6, and 8th amendments are the
key documents you will use. Make sure you use the case number/year for cases
written about. This is an actual “judge ruled” case with a court number and not one of
public opinion such as “OJ or “Casey” or “Trevon/Zimmerman”. DO NOT use cases
noted in discussion boards or used in assignments.

CASE BRIEF GUIDELINES
The case briefs, with appropriate case number/year will the following:
FACTS: 3-9 sentences summarizing the important facts.
ISSUE: Usually there is only one issue in a case. It generally asks a constitutional question or raises a constitutional issue and set out why a case is important.
HOLDING: The holding generally answers the constitutional question raised or addresses the issue raised.
REASONING: (The most difficult part of the brief.) Explain why the court held or decided the way it did. It should be approximately 10+ sentences.
CASE SIGNIFICANCE: 5+ sentences which will include the impact on law enforcement or corrections personnel.
NOTE: You will NOT quote the legal case or brief but you will summarize it in YOUR own words. Quotations are not accepted in the briefs as you must learn to summarize this information. Plagiarism software WILL be used in this course.
A summary paragraph comparing and contrasting the two cases is required.

Just a few reminders about case studies:Case studies are your assessments in this course. Treat them as you would a test.
Case studies focus on the application of the material so be sure you are comfortable with the material and have reviewed the videos, particularly those that specify “Application”.

This research paper is to be about some specific topic regarding 20th century Berlin, as the course is centered on Berlin as a whole during this time period, covering its culture, history, and memory. For my research paper, I chose to write about Berlin infrastructure before and directly following World War II. I want to compare the conditions of the infrastructure in the city prior to the war and after it. I also want to focus on how damaged the infrastructure in the city was after the war and how the city eventually recovered its infrastructure as a whole. This topic is not set in stone, although it would be preferred to use this one if there are enough sources and research available to generate a 20 page research paper, since this is the topic I said I would be writing about. However, I can change my mind, and if you see that there is another specific topic within 20th century Berlin that you would have an easier time forming a research paper about that would be of better quality, then I'm more than open to that as well. Feel free to use as many sources as you like, of any nature (books, journal articles, internet resources, interviews), as long as they are cited in Chicago style. When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking.

The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.
For Part I of the assignment (due Week 2), you read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes, reviewed the Procon.org Website in order to gather information, and engaged in prewriting to examine your thoughts.
* Remember that in the Week 2 Discussion, you examined the biases discussed in Chapter 2 of the webtext.

In Part II of the assignment (due Week 4), you will write a paper to synthesize your ideas.
Part II – Writing
Write at three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:
1. State your position on the topic you selected for Assignment 1.1.
2. Identify (3) three premises (reasons) from the Procon.org website that support your position and explain why you selected these specific reasons.
3. Explain your answers to the “believing” questions about the three (3) premises opposing your position from the Procon.org website.
4. Examine at least two (2) types of biases that you likely experienced as you evaluated the premises for and against your position.
5. Discuss the effects of your own enculturation or group identification that may have influenced your biases.
6. Discuss whether or not your thinking about the topic has changed after playing the “Believing Game,” even if your position on the issue has stayed the same.
