This assignment is designed for you to apply the theory and skills you have learned in this class. You should plan on observing and evaluating a public speech. This means that you will be a “live-audience-member” of a public speech. The criteria employed for this analysis will be the same criteria by which we evaluate speeches in the course. As a result, you will want to focus on whether the speech contained an identifiable introduction, body, and conclusion. We will discuss the speech critique in class. In a chemical plant there are four “identical” reactors that can be run in parallel. Raw materials from a common source are fed continuously to the reactors. The standard operating temperature of these reactors is 120°C, but there is a proposal to use 180 °C. It is claimed that this increased temperature should improve the yield of the process.

Set up an experimental design over a four-day period to test the hypothesis that the increased temperature will improve the yield, using temperature levels at 120, 140, 160 and 180°C.

Cost-volume-profit analysis is an extension of break-even analysis. CVP analysis enables managers to understand cost behavior and the effect on profits in response to a wide variety of influences, such as changes in volume, variable and fixed costs, and price. This helps management make appropriate business decisions. For example, CVP analysis helps management identify a break-even point if volume or costs change or determine the volume necessary for a targeted profit level. CVP analysis can also help management develop a pricing strategy by projecting the effects the different price structures will have on costs and profits.
