Consider the difference between these terms. Why is it important for a researcher to be familiar with these terms?

As you begin your research process, you will come across new terms and concepts that seem unique to research—in fact, they may seem like another language. When learning a new language, reference materials, such as a dictionary or grammar book, are always important to have close at hand. The Walden Library provides a helpful reference tool called The SAGE Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods to guide you through the language acquisition of research terminology and concepts. (While encyclopedias are useful in certain instances such as this, it is important to remember that citing them in your coursework, KAMs, dissertations, or thesis is not appropriate.) In this Discussion, you will use this resource, along with your text and video segments, to work with the philosophies of science and research approaches.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the following terms in The SAGE Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods: paradigm, epistemology, and ontology.

Review Creswell’s definitions of worldview, paradigms, epistemologies, and ontologies on page 6 of the course text, Research Design.

Review the definitions that Dr. Patton offers for epistemology and ontology in the “Research Design” media segment.

Review the definition of philosophy of science in the Learning Resources.

Review Chapters 1 and 2 in the course text, A Primer in Theory Construction. Be attentive to the development of a scientific body of knowledge and paradigms.

Determine how you would define these terms: philosophy of science, paradigm, epistemology, ontology. Note that defining philosophy of science is different from asking you about your personal philosophy of your discipline, such as your philosophy of education, or your philosophy of management.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post the following in 2–3 paragraphs:

What other stylistic devices were effective/ineffective? Explain.

This assignment is designed for you to apply the theory and skills you have learned in this class. You should plan on observing and evaluating a public speech. This means that you will be a “live-audience-member” of a public speech. The criteria employed for this analysis will be the same criteria by which we evaluate speeches in the course. As a result, you will want to focus on whether the speech contained an identifiable introduction, body, and conclusion. We will discuss the speech critique in class. This assignment will average 5-7 pages of text (do not exceed 10 pages of text), the assignment will be in Times New Roman style font, font size 12, double spaced, 1” margins (on top, bottom, right, and left sides), and APA citation guidelines will be observed. Grammar and syntax play an important role in your ability to convey arguments. I will deduct 20% from your total score for every five (5) grammatical errors. I will NOT accept late assignments..

Criterion 1: YOUR DESCRIPTION OF THE SPEECH

Please note the type of speech you are criticizing (informative, persuasive,…?). Also, note the context of the speech. In other words, did you attend a school seminar, a house of worship, a political rally,…? Explain. Describe the demographics of the audience.

Criterion 2: YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE INTRODUCTION OF THE SPEECH

Did the speaker provide a thesis statement? What was it? Did the speaker use attention-getting devices? What were they? How effective were they? Did the speaker provide the overview of the speech? In what form was it presented? Was it in narrative form? Outline form? Overall, did the speaker’s introduction allow you to anticipate topics within the speech? Explain.

Criterion 3: YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE BODY OF THE SPEECH

How did the speaker support claims? What type of evidence was used? Were the sources of this evidence credible? Why or why not? How closely did the speech adhere to the overview, if any, provided at the beginning? Explain.

Criterion 4: YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE CONCLUSION OF THE SPEECH

How did the speaker finalize the claims? In other words, what links tied the speech? Were these links effective/ineffective? Why? Did the initial speech framework coincide with the concluding remarks? Did the speaker stray from the established logical frame? Explain.

Criterion 5: YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE SPEAKER

How did the speaker’s style affect your overall reaction to the speech? For example, did the speaker’s use of eye contact, pitch, vocal rate…distract you from the intended message? How? What types of proofs were used to gain credibility? What other stylistic devices were effective/ineffective? Explain.

Criterion 6: YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS

After assessing the various components of the speech, provide your recommendations for improvement. It is NOT acceptable to provide recommendations without elaboration. In other words, do not write, “…I didn’t like the speech…just because.” If you make a claim, then substantiate that claim. Use evidence from your text or lecture material. Always answer the WHY question.

What would be the best fitting design for this situation? Why?

In a chemical plant there are four “identical” reactors that can be run in parallel. Raw materials from a common source are fed continuously to the reactors. The standard operating temperature of these reactors is 120°C, but there is a proposal to use 180 °C. It is claimed that this increased temperature should improve the yield of the process.

Set up an experimental design over a four-day period to test the hypothesis that the increased temperature will improve the yield, using temperature levels at 120, 140, 160 and 180°C.

Please note that all reactors can be operated each day but each can only be operated at one temperature on a given day. What would be the best fitting design for this situation? Why? Create the design matrix and give exact and specific instructions to the plant operator what to do each day. She will run the experiments exactly as instructed.

2

Pick any one of the following superstitions and design an experiment to test if the superstition holds. To run your experiment, you have at most one month, maximum $1000 and under no circumstances you can do more than 100 runs altogether.

Specify the following:

a) Superstition selected? Problem statement? (1 pt)

b) Factor(s)? Levels? (1 pt)

c) Response Variable? (1 pt)

d) Is there a need to use blocks? If yes, what factor would be the blocking one? (1 pt)

e) Total number of runs? (1 pt)

f) Approximate time frame? (1 pt)

g) Approximate cost? (1 pt)

h) Best design method? (e.g. 2^3 design with a block, a 3^2 resolution III fractional factorial design, graeco-latin square, etc. ) Why? (3 pts)

• An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

• Eating chocolate causes zits.

• Shaving your legs makes the hair grow back more densely.

• A knife placed under the bed during childbirth will ease the pain of labor.

• Drinking coffee will stunt a child’s growt

Describe where these activities would be added to the list (relative to the other activities already listed).

Assignment 2: Strategic Action Plans

There are some elements missing from the action plan in Table 9.1 in your text book. If the EMR system is to be integrated with similar systems at local hospitals, and the physicians fully utilize its data-sharing capabilities, representatives from the hospitals must be drawn into this implementation process.

(Moseley III, George B. . Managing Health Care Business Strategy. Jones & Bartlett Publishers, May 2008. p. 251).

Write a three page report answering the following questions:

  • What elements (at least two) are missing from the action plan in Table 9.1 for the EMR system? Justify your choice.
  • Describe the activities that should be implemented to address the missing elements.
  • Describe where these activities would be added to the list (relative to the other activities already listed).
  • Specify exactly which people from the hospitals and practice will participate in these new activities and justify your choice.

How will you use CVP analysis to make business decisions at your workplace? Support your answer with examples.

Cost-volume-profit analysis is an extension of break-even analysis. CVP analysis enables managers to understand cost behavior and the effect on profits in response to a wide variety of influences, such as changes in volume, variable and fixed costs, and price. This helps management make appropriate business decisions. For example, CVP analysis helps management identify a break-even point if volume or costs change or determine the volume necessary for a targeted profit level. CVP analysis can also help management develop a pricing strategy by projecting the effects the different price structures will have on costs and profits.

In this assignment, you will examine how you can use CVP analysis to plan and make various business decisions. In addition, you will analyze financial data of Compnet’s potential product acquisition (Prime Component) and determine the effects on profit due to variations in its costs and sales price.

Tasks:

Part I: Using CVP Analysis for Business Decisions

Respond to the following:

How will you use CVP analysis to make business decisions at your workplace? Support your answer with examples.
Using an example from your workplace, distinguish between variable and fixed cost structures. Why might different managers assess the same cost differently?
How would you use CVP analysis to develop a budget? Elaborate using examples.
How can the sales department use the CVP tool when analyzing customer profitability?

Write your initial response in a minimum of 500 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

By Saturday, November 28, 2015, post your response to the appropriateDiscussion Area. Through Monday, November 30, 2015, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Part II: Performing CVP Analysis

Continuing with the same scenario as in previous assignments for Compnet, complete the following:

Select the links that follow to download and review the files containing the financial data of the product line.
Compnet Balance Sheet Income Statement
Compnet Budget Template
Recalculate the break-even point on the basis of the following what-if scenarios:
Variable costs increase by 5 percent.
The sales price decreases by 10 percent due to an increase in competition.
Click here to access the CVP template and use it to perform your calculations.
Create a 4-6 page paper that includes the above calculations and analyzes the decision options.
Create a one-page memo for your senior management that summarizes your findings and provides recommendations.

Submission Details:

Create 5–7-page document in Microsoft Word that includes both the memo and the paper.

Review standard office memo templates available on the internet and create the one-page memo in Microsoft Word considering the audience to whom this information needs to be presented.

Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M4_A2.doc.
