Assignment 2
Research/project proposal of 3,000 words (60% of module marks)
The assessment criteria are on the eBridge site of the module.
Hand in date as stated in section 8.

Rationale
This assessment is designed to prepare you for the honours project (dissertation or independent study) you will undertake in your final year. This assessment intends to cover all the Learning out comes stated in Section 12.

Brief
Design a research proposal (the first step in undertaking a dissertation or independent study unit in your final year). When setting out your proposal, please include the following:

-Background and case: Why this research is important, how you came to choose it and its relevance to your programme of study.
-Clear aims and objectives: No more than 5 objectives. The objectives can take the form of hypotheses or research questions. Supplementary research questions may also be necessary to give strength to your proposal.
-An initial literature review: This is important to support your research proposal where appropriate. You should review a minimum of 10 references no more than 5 of them being textbooks. Your reference list at the end of the assignment will not be included in your word count, but ALL work cited in the text will.
-A brief case for the research methods and research approach you will adopt and support this with relevant references. Ideas/arguments developed in assignment may be included here if useful.
-Any limitations to your research and how you may overcome them, paying careful attention to ethical issues. (These need to be considered though you need NOT complete the HUBS Ethics Proforma at this stage).
-The key practice and/or academic benefits– contribution to knowledge from your research.

Task Requirements
The assignment will be judged by the quality of the work you provide, which is expected to meet the academic standards of level five.
Your assignment must be word-processed and double spaced in 12 point Arial.
The title of your work should appear at the top of the first page, and for this assignment, you DO need to use a contents page.
References will be Harvard style within the text and listed alphabetically, on a new page, at the end of the assignment using the heading References. You should NOT list references you have not used in the text. Page numbers of references MUST be included where text is within quotation marks.
Marks will be awarded for scholarship and related to the quality of the analysis carried out. This reflects the University assessment criteria for level 5. You MUST demonstrate what was discussed from the module as taught in class, as read in the core text, and as developed during tutorial sessions. References from ACADEMIC research papers from online journals (NOT INTERNET SOURCES-E.g Wikipedia) are expected to illustrate your examples. You must be careful to avoid plagiarism.

In the case of those planning to undertake a year in industry, this proposal may include specific discussion of investigations and research actions that could be considered during this year.

NOTE: There are many different types of final year projects, so the way you approach the six sections listed above may be very different from your class mates attempting other projects. Follow the guidance given during semester two, and be sure to participate in workshops/seminars where we will help you!

Create or Revise An Intelligence Agency

Create your own intelligence agency. You can do this one of two ways–(a) choose one and institute major reforms in its structure; or (b) build a completely new one whose purposes you will choose.
For example, if you choose the CIA, you may want to use some of the reforms suggested in the book to change its structure into “centers” for transnational targets; reorganize the way the departments are arranged by geographical areas or subject matters. You may want to abolish some departments and create new ones or combine them, or anything else you can think of that might make a better and more efficient agency. When I was there, each department had its own lawyer who rejected or restricted many of the proposed actions before they could get out of the office.
If you choose to create your own agency, who will it report to? The President directly or to the DNI first? Will it be more bureaucratic or a stand-alone super secret place that reports only to the President directly without any middlemen? A lot of new spy fiction books have these which also include assassinations as part of their covert actions. I have heard rumors that they exist, but I do not know for sure.
Do NOT use classified sources and methods for any reason.
Your project text should be about 2500 words (about 10 pages, double-spaced in a 12-point font and one-inch margins). Some graphics, diagrams, organizational charts, etc. are all welcome, if you wish to include them and are talented in these ways, but they are not required. If you do, make sure most of your project is text.
This is a creative exercise, and I want you to have fun with it. There are almost no limits for this project, so think out of the box.

This is a course on national security and intelligence, make sure your project reflects that subject and not just adding a department to a regular domestic law enforcement agency or something to do with prisons. You can add a division to an existing department, if you wish, but it must be relevant to the intent and subject natter of the course. You can also create a new agency or reorganize an existing one. You can also add a new department, which I had not thought of, but it a great idea.

TASK:

To value a company using enterprise discounted cash flow (DCF), we discount free cash flow by the weighted average cost of capital (WACC). The weighted average cost of capital represents the opportunity cost that investors face for investing their funds in one particular business instead of others with similar risk. To determine the weighted average cost of capital, calculate its three components: the cost of equity, the after-tax cost of debt, and the companys target capital structure. Since none of the variables is directly observable, we employ various models, assumptions, and approximations to estimate each component. In this assignment you will be using financial information from Henkel AG and selected market data (in Excel) to assist in answering the questions given below

QUESTION 1: 50%
The cost of equity is built on the three factors: the risk-free rate, the market risk premium, and a company-specific risk adjustment. The most commonly used model for this estimate is the capital asset pricing model (CAPM). To determine the CAPM, we need to estimate a risk-free rate, the market risk premium, and the market beta.

a. To determine the risk-free rate, please use Treasury data from the Select Market Data spreadsheet. On the Yields tab, you will find yields to maturities for U.S. and German Treasury rates. For Henkel AG, which Treasury rate at which maturity is most appropriate to use in valuing the company?

b. To determine Henkels corporate beta, unlever (and relever) the ordinary least squares (OLS) market betas for each company in the European Household and Personal Care segment. Prices can be found on the Prices tab of the Select Market Data spreadsheet. To determine the OLS market beta, regress 10-year monthly returns against the MSCI World index denominated in the same currency. In Excel, this can be done using the SLOPE formula.
Next, unlever the market beta using each companys year-end debt-to-equity ratio and the formula: bu = be/(1 + D/E). To determine Henkels corporate beta, re-lever the average industry beta using Henkels year-end debt-to-equity ratio. Repeat this process for each of Henkels divisions.

c. Assume the market risk premium equals 5 percent.

QUESTION 2: 50%
Henkel does not carry debt beyond five years. To determine the cost of debt:

a. For Henkel AG, which Treasury rate at which maturity is most appropriate to use in valuing the cost of debt of the company?

b. Add a default premium based on the companys debt rating by Standard & Poors. Yields by credit rating can be found on the Yields worksheet of the Select Market Data spread sheet . Henkel reports its debt rating on its investor relations web site at www.henkel.com/investor-relations/credit-ratings-11952.htm. If the companys rating is between reported portfolios, interpolate between the nearest ratings.

c. Determine Henkels marginal tax rate, use the tax reconciliation table in the annual report. Set the marginal tax rate equal to the Tax rate on income.

Helpful Page Locations, Henkel 2009 Annual Report
Taxes on income (the tax reconciliation table) can be found in note 9 starting on page 92.

d. To complete the cost of capital, weight the after-tax cost of debt and cost of equity using the companys year-end capital structure (found in the Select Market Data spread sheet).

The questions that we have are the initial assessment plan.
The answers are assessment findings.
The security recommendations are how we would fix the findings.

Guidelines:
Each one of our sections should be a minimum of 3000 words for the Interim Plans.
-We can come up with the group Interim Assessment Methodology together, we can tackle that last, but for reference we will be adhering to the NIST 800-30 2012 risk assessment plan.
-Each member for their section will have to:
oConduct a summary of their sections status before they conduct a plan, or offer recommendation we can edit each submission to account for the Summary of the Current Security Situation at BRI requirement for our paper
oRisk Assessment Findings What did you find? Have it as a separate section, but it could very well overlap with some of the information from your summary (above bullet point).
oRisk Assessment Plan How would you go about addressing each of these issues? Not what do you recommend, but rather, you now have a finding how are you assessing the level of danger/threat?
oSecurity Recommendations Report What strategies will resolve these vulnerabilities.
oSummary does not have to be long, all summaries submitted will be edited together to provide flow.
oYou will need to cite at least 7-10 sources for a good grade.
oRemember that he is not looking for too many quotes, paraphrase as much as you can!

Hemingway and Indian Garden a Biographical Essay

Attached is the final project summary that I was given in class. This paper is a biographical analysis on Hemingway and his short story \”Indian Camp.\” My thesis should revolve around how Hemingway projected his own fears and life experiences through the three main characters: the Dr., the child Nick, and the Indian man who commits suicide.
The main connections I want in the body are: How Hemingway\’s wife was having a child at the time he was writing this, and he was terrified that she would not make it and that there was nothing he could do to alleviate her pain; how the Indian man killed himself because he could \”not stand it\” (and that Hemingway projecting his worst fears, of being weak/suicide, are projected on a Native american); how was first shielded from violence/blood, or whatever you want to call a C-section, but it was a useless effort because in the end, the boy witnessed violence/blood. Nick not being introduced to this concept through life (childbirth), but his first view was of death (the suicide); and how the Modernism movement promoted self-consciousness and reflection and linking how all of these themes in \”Indian Camp\” reflect Hemingway\’s own fears and doubts and how that is an aspect of Modernism.

Notes: Try to incorporate all of these topics in the essay but MAKE SURE that the link between Hemingway\’s biography/life and the analysis of the text itself stays relevant throughout the paper. I put 5 sources, but use as many as you think you need while writing this paper (as long as everything is justified and non common information is backed up with sources) also, using interviews or journals or anything by the actual author that could be relevant counts as a source as well. The link to Modernism is very important as well.

Explain this approach. Identify and discuss relevant research on the causation, diagnosis, and treatment of personality disorders.

Personality disorders are chronic and persistent behavioral and emotional disturbances that are often difficult to treat. Some professionals have argued that these disorders are not mental disorders at all, but personality styles—that these individuals are just odd or unusual. Review your textbook and a minimum of two peer-reviewed references and discuss the diagnostic and measurement challenges and issues related to personality disorders. What classification approach is currently used in the DSM? Explain this approach. Identify and discuss relevant research on the causation, diagnosis, and treatment of personality disorders.

Your assignment should be at least a 2–3-page paper in Word format.Apply APA standards to citation of sources and include a cover page and reference page. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc.

By Wednesday, February 17, 2016, deliver your assignment to the M4: Assignment 2 Dropbox.
