Can a utilitarian consistently reject as immoral the enslavement of a small group of people whose enslavement brings great happiness to a much larger group of people?

Mill famously argued that the ethical action is what leads to the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people. Please write an essay about Mill’s utilitarian ethical theory that answers the following questions:

Does utilitarian theory require us to–somehow–have certain knowledge about the future? Can we identify which actions will cause the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people without having certain knowledge of the future?
Can a utilitarian consistently reject as immoral the enslavement of a small group of people whose enslavement brings great happiness to a much larger group of people?
Do either of these two problems (the ‘knowing the future’ problem and the ‘justification of slavery’ problem) mean that utilitarianism is an unsatisfactory ethical theory? Why or why not?

Please ensure that your essay addresses each component of the assigned questions and that your answer is well-organized, uses excellent, college-level prose, and makes judicious use of textual evidence. Your essay should be 600-900 words long.

What is the present value of a security that will pay $5,000 in 20 years if securities of equal risk pay 7% annually?

An annuity is defined as a series of payments of a fixed amount for a specific number of periods, thus, $100 a year for 10 years in an annuity, but $100 in year 1, $200 in year 2, and $400 in years 3 through 10 does not constitute an annuity. However, the entire series does contain an annuity. Is this statement true or false?

PROBLEM: 4-1

If you deposit $10,000 in a bank account that pays 10% interest annually, how much will be in your account after 5 years?

PROBLEM: 4-2

What is the present value of a security that will pay $5,000 in 20 years if securities of equal risk pay 7% annually?

PROBLEM: 4-12

Find the future value of the following annuities. The first payment in these annuities is made at the end of year 1, so they are ordinary annuities. (Note: You can leave values in the TVM register, switch to begin mode, press FV, and find the FV of the annuity due.)

a. $400 per year for 10 years at 10%

b. $200 per year for 5 years at 5%

c. $400 per year for 5 years at 0%

d. Now rework parts a, b, and c assuming that payments are made at the beginning of each year; that is, they are annuities due.

PROBLEM 4-29

Assume that your aunt sold her house on December 31, and to help close the sale she took a second mortgage in the amount of $10,000 as a part of the payment. The mortgage has a quoted (or nominal) interest rate of 10%; it calls for payment every 6 months, beginning on June 30, and is to be amortized over 10 years. Now, 1 year later, you aunt must inform the IRS and the person who bought the house about the interest that was included in the two payments made during the year.

(This interest will be income to your aunt and a deduction to the buyer of the house) To the closest dollar, what is the total amount of interest that was paid during the first year?

What solutions has the manager tried? Have the solutions worked?

Working With Employees: An I/O Commentary on Real World Problems

This required Portfolio assignment will give you experience observing and interacting with people outside of the classroom. It has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to develop skills, synthesize knowledge, and integrate learning in a real world setting. This assignment accomplishes that goal by challenging you to:

· Conduct a 30-minute, semi-structured interview with a manager

· Identify common challenges and issues that arise in the workplace

· Evaluate strategies for addressing these challenges

· Integrate your findings with evidence-based literature from journal articles, textbook, and additional scholarly sources.

Objective: This assignment is designed to help you identify common problems that managers face when dealing with employees, and the solutions that managers use in an attempt to solve those problems. This assignment will also give you an opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of the solutions from a practical perspective and from the perspective of research in Industrial/Organizational psychology.

Step 1: Identify someone in your community who is a manager. This should be someone who is responsible for recruiting and/or selecting employees, supervising employees, and evaluating employee performance.

Step 2: Conduct a 30-minute interview with the manager. In your interview, be sure to cover the following questions:

· What are some of the common problems that you have experienced with employees? Be sure to steer the discussion toward relevant topics such as recruitment, employee selection, employee motivation, employee training, job attitudes, giving feedback, creating incentives, managing conflict, and so forth.

· Identify two major problems that the manager mentions and ask how he or she has responded to those problems. What solutions has the manager tried? Have the solutions worked?

Step 3: Using scholarly sources such as your textbook and professional journal articles that you find in the University Library, research the two problems mentioned by the manager. What does the field of I/O say about these types of problems or issues? What recommendations might you make to the manager?

Document your interview and your library research in a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper. Your paper should consist of the following parts:

· An introduction, describing the individual that you interviewed and his/her position

· A summary of the interview focusing on the two major problems and attempted solutions

· A scholarly commentary with recommendations from the perspective of I/O psychology

Be sure to include at least five scholarly references in your paper. Provide a list your specific interview questions as an Appendix. Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Discuss role of leadership in managing diversity.

Shortly after the CNO (Chief Nurse Officer) completed her annual performance appraisal and salary evaluations, as required by the Joint Commission; you are confronted by a minority female RN that claims that her wages are substantially less than her male RN counterpart who is performing the exact same job in the oncology department. She feels as if she is being discriminated against. You realize you have no procedures in place to address these issues. Although minorities continue to be underrepresented within the healthcare workforce, your healthcare systems has continued to diversify with an increased number of ethnic and racial employees. You are aware that minorities and women will continue to comprise the highest percentage of new entrants into the labor force. You also notice that this is a pattern as this is the fourth employee that has confronted you with an issue regarding diversity (i.e. specifically differences in racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds) in the last six weeks from the oncology department.

Directions:

Create a 15-20 slide PowerPoint Presentation to make a recommendation to the CEO to create a diversity office. The presentation should include the following:

Explanation of the issues associated with awarding pay increases as it relates to performance appraisal to ensure consistency.
Identification of components of compensation.
Determination of the impact on diversity in the healthcare organization.
Discussion of the role leadership plays in managing diversity and strategies to employ to effectively manage diversity
Identification of major laws impacting the healthcare industry as it relates to hiring, terminating, and discriminating against employees.
