the design of a storm water management system for a 50-acre watershed that is to be developed into a mix of residential and commercial lots. A small shopping area/center is to be included. Predevelopment area is wooded. An elevated four-lane highway forms the downstream boundary of the watershed. Your design must include a standard storm water collection system that will allow part of the runoff to be taken to a treatment facility outside the watershed; you may hook up to an existing collection system at a manhole on the other side of the highway. Performance goals (quantity and quality) for the system and the size, configuration, and location of the system components are at your discretion but must be typical and reasonable. Your system components must include: (1) one or more culverts; (2) a retention basin with appropriate inlet and outlet structures; (3) appropriate drainage structures for roadway(s) traversing the watershed; and (4) at least one grass/infiltration swale placed at your discretion. LID design is strongly encouraged.
Your selection of design environment (slope, soil type, cover, etc.) is at your discretion but must be typical. You are strongly encouraged to select a design environment that is typical of Iowa City and/or Johnson County.
