Health Matters: Music and the Mind

Consider the following scenario:

You are friends with a family who has a 5-year-old son named Howard. Howard loves coming to school gets along with well other children. He has a positive attitude about learning and is persistent when facing challenges. His favorite thing about school is music time. He loves to sing and dance. During center time, he plays with instruments and listens to music on head phones. His school also has a music teacher, and Howard is learning how to play the piano. Howard was recently diagnosed with a learning disability and his cognitive and language development appears delayed. His parents want to put him in an academically focused program that does not include music education. They feel that this type of experience does not address his special learning needs and that more time must be spent on academics in order to bring him up to grade level. What advice do you give Howard’s parents? In your answer, discuss developmental milestones for this age group and cite research regarding the effect of music education and experience on the cognitive development of young children.

You may refer to the national standards for Arts education, ArtsEdge, Standards, or any other state standards you would like.

Take a moment to watch the Five-Year-Olds Pilot Their Own Project Learning video

“Themes and projects are strategies for breaking away rigid designated time blocks…Thematic teaching allows children to investigate topics thoroughly in an integrated manner…Project work has been shown to be a successful method of meeting standards” (Benson & Miller, 2008; Helm 2008). Review Chapter 16 of the required text for more information about thematic teaching. Locate a set of standards for math and science and describe a cross-curricular, student-centered project that meets those standards in an integrated way.

Option One:

Share three math content standards and three science content standards. Then, develop a project that meets these standards. Describe your project and identify two ways in which this project is developmentally appropriate. Also explain your approach for making your project child-centered.

How many times terms of affection are exchanged?

very person has a belief and value system. In very simple terms, a “value system” is the set of ideals that guide our choices throughout life. These choices can be as simple as what kind of foods to eat, or as difficult and life-changing as who to love. Most of a person’s values and beliefs are taught to them by their families during early adolescence. Consequently, this can be a difficult time in the life of some families. “Attitudinal conformity” often becomes an issue– that means, the expectation that a child’s attitudes and ideas will closely align with his or her parents’.

What is your belief system? Is it the same as your family of orientation’s? Are there any beliefs about which you and your loved ones sorely disagree?

Now we’d like to do something a little differently. Over the next two days, you’re going to observe your own family schematics in action. Keep a journal recording:

How many arguments occur Their causes (money? schoolwork? chores?) Their resolutions
How many times terms of affection are exchanged
How often you eat with your family Who prepared the food and who cleaned up
What’s discussed at the table
How often you talk to or see extended family members
Anything else that you think sheds some light on how your family works!

Once you’ve recorded all your data, write a summary of how these everyday interactions reflect your family’s patterns. What might these observations indicate? Has studying your family provided you with any new insights? Your summary should be no less than 250 words long

Write a 1-2 page campaign speech that your candidate could give explaining his/her platform and reason for wanting to be elected.

In the last section, we learned about the various political parties that exist in the United States today. In this section, we studied how the parties nominate their candidates and how campaigns are run. In this assignment, you’ll put your knowledge from both of these sections together to create a fictional presidential candidate from the party of your choice. Follow the steps below to complete this assignment:

Select one of the minor parties (not Democrats or Republicans). You may use thePolitics1 website or any other resource to select and research your party.
After you’ve researched your party, create a list of 5 issues that will comprise your candidate’s platform. Make sure it is properly based on the issues supported/opposed by your chosen party.
Write a brief biography of your candidate. What is his/her background? Why is he/she running for president? Be sure to include factors like gender, age, occupation, etc.
Write a 1-2 page campaign speech that your candidate could give explaining his/her platform and reason for wanting to be elected. Be sure the speech is persuasive and realistic.

Once you’ve completed this activity, submit your platform list, biography and speech to your instructor. Be sure to include a list of sources you used in your research of your party. This list should include at least two sources, with one being the party’s official homepage.

Point value: 50 points

Grading Rubric:

Did you feel that candidate had the better, more convincing commercials? Why or why not?

Select a presidential election year from 1952 – 2004. You are about to take a journey into the past…. Follow the steps below to complete this assignment:

Go to The Living Room Candidate website
Click on your selected election year to the left. Read the “overview” section, and each section associated with the names of the candidates. Be sure to do this first so you have background information on the times and what the major issues were during that election year.
After reading the introductory material, look at the small images at the bottom of the page. For each of these that you click on, you’ll see an actual television commercial for that candidate’s campaign. Watch each of the commercials for your selected election year. While watching take notes about the type of ads they used. How were they trying to “sell” the candidate? Were they attacking their opponents? What strategies were they using?
After watching the commercials, go back to the upper right and click on “RESULTS” for your election year. Check out the electoral map that appears.

After completing these steps, you will write an analysis of this election year and the campaign that took place. Write a 2-3 page analytical essay answering the following questions. Feel free to expand on your thoughts more – you do not need to stick only to the questions below.

What were your thoughts on the commercials? Did the candidates “fight fair”? Did they use good tactics to prove why a voter should vote for them?
If you were a voter in that election, based on the commercials, who would you have voted for and why?
Who won the election? Did you feel that candidate had the better, more convincing commercials? Why or why not?

Once you have completed your essay, submit it to your instructor.

An interview process has three interdependent phases. A successful interview takes into account the perspectives of all those involved: the interviewer, victims, witnesses, and suspects.

An investigator must prepare for every interview, whether it is executed in the field or in the controlled confines of headquarters, and adhere to the process of interviewing.

In this assignment, you will act as a potential interviewer and formulate a plan for an interview. By doing so, you will get a firsthand experience of the phases of the interview process and the preparation for each phase.

Apply critical thinking skills to analyze business situations.

Mary Smith is the Manager of Market Intelligence for Acme Automotive Accessories (AAA) Corporation, a $500 million manufacturing company traded on the NYSE.

As she boarded a plane with one of her subordinates, for a return trip from Chicago to the company’s headquarters in Atlanta, she was reviewing possible reasons why AAA was experiencing a shrinking share of their market. Mary tried to relax for her return trip, and reached for the in-flight magazine located in the seat-back pocket in front of her.

As she reached for the magazine, Mary discovered a document marked “Confidential-Restricted Circulation” with AAA’s main competitor’s logo on the front cover. A brief scan of the document revealed that it contained new product announcements scheduled over the next two years as well as preliminary pricing information and market share estimates. The report also contained answers to many of the key questions included in a request-for-proposal (RFP) she recently sent to three consulting firms. Since a research contract had not been awarded yet, she could avoid spending AAA’s budgeted funds by using the information in this document and canceling the research project.

Mary also recalled that her company had hired a new corporate ethicist two months ago who had drafted a revision to AAA’s “Guidelines to Business Conduct” policy. Among the numerous guidelines was a provision requiring employees who possessed competitive information that was obtained in an unauthorized manner to return the information or face dismissal. To the best of her knowledge, however, these guidelines had not been formally approved. Another issue was the potential impact of potential US legislation regarding disclosure/transparency of the activities of publicly-traded firms. In addition, during her last performance evaluation, Mary’s boss told her that if the results of her research project were satisfactory and were delivered on schedule and below budget, she would be eligible for a performance bonus, salary increase and possible promotion.

Mary had the next hour before the plane landed to decide if and how she should return the document or if she should just slip it into her briefcase.

QUESTION: What would you recommend to Mary Smith, and why?

NOTE: In your analysis, you should consider the following issues:

– Possible biases that may exist

– Emotions that should be addressed

– Fairness to all entities involved (AAA, the competition, etc.)

– Need for reflective versus expedient decision-making

– Critical thinking factors (deductive/inductive reasoning, fallacies, etc.).

AGAIN — Be sure to include all references/information sources.
