Thinking Like a Sociologist

Critical thinking writing assignment: Thinking Like a Sociologist

Readings: Jody Miller, Getting Played

Ferris & Stein, The Real World

Description of the writing assignment:

Drawing on your reading from the book Getting Played choose two major themes and concepts

that you found extremely interesting from each chapter, discuss the major arguments, and then

connect the theme to a thematic session from the textbook. You should choose the themes from

Miller’s book specifically from chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6, and connect each theme to only one

chapter/thematic session from the textbook.

The structure of the paper:

1. A brief introductory paragraph should address the author’s research topic.

2. The main body of the paragraph should identify the chapter and theme.

3. Discuss thoroughly the theme(s) that you chose by providing arguments. Do this for

every chapter.

4. Connect the theme(s) you chose with a chapter from the textbook. It is not necessary to

apply specific concepts-you are more than welcome to do so-but rather the sociological

significance of the chapter. For example: how can you apply the chapter on culture to

understand a cultural aspect in the lives of girls in the study?

5. By all means, the paper should be a sociological one. Your arguments should be based on

sociological findings i.e. the information you learned from each chapter during the

semester.

6. Conclude the paper with a statement of the importance of sociological thinking and the

acquisition of sociological imagination in understanding every aspect of social life-even

those aspects that you are not directly involved. Develop two policies that you think may

improve the lives of girls and boys in disadvantaged communities.

Two business law essays

Precision Parts Corporation and Quality Gears, Inc., are competitors selling certain machine parts that are otherwise generally unattainable in their geographic market. This market includes the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Precision Parts and Quality Gears agree that Precision Parts will no longer sell in Minnesota and that Quality Gears will no longer sell in North and South Dakota. Have Precision Parts and Quality Gears violated any antitrust law? If so, which one? Explain. If they had divided their market by type of customer rather than geographic are, would the result be the same? Why or why not?Essay 2: (250 words)

During a storm in Tornado Alley, a house is destroyed, but its owner Dorothy survives. Dorothy plans to return to the site to salvage her possessions, but she delays. Meanwhile, Elliott combs through the ruins and removes all useful items. Dorothy learns of the recovery and files a suit against Elliott, claiming that the items are hers. Elliott responds that the destroyed house was abandoned and therefore he has good title to whatever he took possession of.

Research Paper

You will select a topic in American History. Everything from Aviation to Zoology is fair game, as long as the topic is school appropriate and focused on American history. Select a topic that will interest you for the rest of the semester. Remember, this is not a report – it is a thesis-based essay; think fact-based and argumentative. Select a topic that you can take a stand on, or have an opinion about, and can use evidence to support your opinion. A biography of Rosa Parks would not be appropriate, but an analysis of her importance and contributions to the American Civil Rights movement would. The impact of the Ford Mustang on the American automotive industry would work, but an overview of great American cars would not.Final draft must be in MLA format, and must include bibliography and title/cover page.I\’m planning to do this essay on the impact of Pearl Harbor on the U.S. I already have a thesis in mind: The attack on Pearl Harbor radically altered the United States and its global role.

Tough Decisions

What are some of the toughest decisions you’ve had to make in your life? What techniques (as explored in the Week 5 lecture) did you use at the time to make them? Would you do anything differently now? Feel free to explore decisions you’ve had to make in your schooling, career (past or present), family life and with friendships.

Your work should be at least 500 words, but mostly draw from your own personal experience. This should be written in first person and give examples from your life. Be sure if you are using information from the readings that you properly cite your readings in this, and in all assignments

Supply Chain

The basic concept behind supply chain management (SCM) is simple: customers order products from you; you keep track of what you’re selling, and you order enough raw materials from your suppliers to meet your customers’ demand. So why is it that, the Economist claimed “Managing a supply chain is becoming a bit like rocket science?”

The problem turns out to be one of coordination. Suppliers, manufacturers, sales people, and customers have their own, often incomplete, understanding of what real demand is. Each group has control over only a part of the supply chain, but each group can influence the entire chain by ordering too much or too little. Further, each group is influenced by decisions that others are making.

This lack of coordination coupled with the ability to influence while being influenced by others leads to what has been called the Bullwip Effect. Decisions made by groups along the supply actually worsen shortages and overstocks.

Go to the link below and play the Near Beer Simulation. Then in an MLA formatted document write a paragraph on how SCM can help companies create a competitive advantage. Following the paragraph answer the questions below based on your results from the game – you can number the questions. The paper should be no more than one page long.

forio.com/simulate/mbean/near-beer-game/run/
1.How many weeks did it take you to reach equilibrium?
2.What inventory shortages and lost orders did you experience?
3.Did you ever have more inventory than customer orders?
4.How did you adjust your production/raw orders to meet customer demand?
5.What challenges/problems did you experience?

Type your responses using MLA format in a Microsoft Word document – if using another application, make sure you save the document in a .doc or .docx format. Title the assignment and attach the document below.

Marketing Models Integration

Marketers create messages about their product and for their customers in a variety of different ways – not just through advertising. This Chapter discusses the IMC or Integrated Marketing Communications which emphasizes how important it is for all parts of the marketing communication process to work together and to be putting out the same message. The Chapter also talks about how these messages change as a product goes through its PLC.

We have looked at various marketing models this semester – specifically the BCG Portfolio Analysis Model (BCG), the Product Life Cycle Model (PLC), and the Diffusion of Innovation (DOI or Consumer Adoption) Model. These models are integrated in much the same way as the IMC is. They all work together and should be used by various individuals within the marketing organization to help explain what is going on with the product and market.

1. Discuss each of these models in terms of what their use is within the marketing function, i.e. why these models are used, how these models are used, who in the organization (Executives, Brand Managers, Product Managers) uses these models, etc.

2. Discuss how each of these models are integrated with and/or support each other in terms of the information they provide the marketing organization.

Your assignment should be well structured using proper English language conventions (using spell check), written in MLA format, and be no more than two pages long. It should be submitted as a .doc or .docx attachment in the assignment submission area. Assignments not using MLA formatting or submitted in the wrong file type (i.e. pages, pdf, etc.) will receive no credit.

Network attacks and defense

4-5 page, single-spaced paper describing how you might design cybersecurity considerations into a real project at your workplace. Start by defining your workplace and the target project. Then describe the information aspects, where you might want to consider adding protection or improving it, how you would justify the return-on-investment and/or cost-benefit of adding security, determining how \”much\” security is necessary, the impact of your security measures on productivity, system efficiency, and usability, etc. If you don\’t have a workplace situation that lends itself easily to this topic, see if you can use a colleague\’s workplace as a case study, apply it to a former workplace as if you were returning as a consultant, or create a fictitious project/company. The important thing is to write it, as before, as if you were addressing your CIO, CEO, CISO, etc.
